anyone heard of Seben?

Hi Mick,
I happen to live a five minute walk from the Mediterranean. Right now there are a few negatives. First, it is not a sandy beach. The Turks seem to have no problem walking on gravel but I don't enjoy it without wearing sandals. using a screen or some other sifter on a sandy beach is seldom a problem. I wonder how satisfactory a search I would have digging under pebbles ranging from an inch to 3 inches in size - using my fingers, I suppose. Second, Very few beach-goers in this winter season who might lose goodies. Third, I expect to move to Istanbul next week & the only nearby beach is the realm of the rich and filthy rich. When spring comes I could take a trip to the Black Sea. There are many beaches for us common folk. Fourth, I have no clear answer on the legality of the use of an MD in Turkey. I'll ask a lawyer friend soon. yet, just for fun, I'll go out very early Sunday morning and see how the Seben Extreme performs. I'll plant some stuff as a test also.

Hi David.
I saw the date on the top post and realised that this was an old thread. I didn't notice the date on your post. So I'm glad you got to read it.
Detecting in gravel can be quite a challenge for most machines, so if you have trouble with it, It may not be the machine.
When I was detecting in Sydney at Christmas time, I came across a Greek fellow that talked to me about detecting in Greece. He said that it is illegal to do so in Greece. This is mostly because that there are a lot of very old cashes of gold coins buried there.(old as in well more than a 1000yrs old). The knew a fellow that dug one of these up with his farm equipment. Due to these treasures "historical significants" is why they won't let people detect. That's enough to make a grown man cry.:lol:
Speaking of Istanbul, My wife's parents were holidaying there 2 months ago. They went to Gallipolli to see the war memorials for both sides. I remember when they were there, my wife got an S.M.S on her phone saying " what a waist of life."
good luck with finding out where you stand in regards to your laws and if the beaches don't work out, then Istanbul is a massive place, and you will probably have more places to hunt than most of us! You may not even have much competition either. (I don't want to think about that one too much as I might get jealous!)
Good Luck.

Oh David. I forgot to mention.
I think your money is made with an iron base. This could also make hunting difficult, as they may come in the same area as nails eta. Check by waiving your money under the detector first and see where you need to set up your discrimination. If this is the case, then you might what to hunt spots that have a higher possibility of money being lost there; ie play equipment eta. As you gain experience, you may want to broaden your horizon then, but with 14 000 000 people in one big city, I don't think you are going to run out of playgrounds any time soon!
all the best.

I just purchased a White's Classic 5ID pro. (First detector and it has not arrived.) Now I am sitting waiting for it to arrive and wondering if I made a mistake and noticed Seben on ebay. Looked around a bit and found a site that sells the "Metal Detector Deep Target" for less, and ships for less than the ebay dealer. $113.+ shipping, which the best I can tell is about $16.

I don't really know anything about the company, but they seem to make quite a lot of stuff, like Stereo Microscopes, Telescopes and other items. I believe they are a Swedish company. I may be wrong about it all though.
I would like to get a first hand report on someone that has used one for a few months, or at least given it a good field test. For the price, and produced by the same company that produces the optical items, it could be a fair detector????? at least, I would think they have the manufacturing ability to make a good detector.
Thanks

Hi arkibilly and welcome to the forum.
You made a good purchase. The Classic 5 is the last of a very popular detector line made by whites, that despite whites wanting to end production on it, their customers aren't letting them. It is simply too popular! From my short experience at handling a Seben, I would not recommend buying one.
I noticed that you posted on the whites forum. You will find the lads there, quite helpful as well. There is one fellow that comes on there by the name of Monty (Berry). He is the most knowledgeable person I know of in the metal detecting community and is held in high regard by all who meet him. The Whites Classic is his all time favourite machine.
I went to the site that you put the link in for, and to be honest, When you make your next purchase of a metal detector, It is always best to buy from a detector specific shop, simply because they have a lot of knowledge, interest, and back up that you won't get anywhere else.
Good luck with your new machine and stay in touch with the lads on the Whites forum, as they will be able to give you heaps of advice while you learn your machine.
Mick Evans.
