Anybody use a pinpointer

They also save you a lot of time locating a target. I use my pinpointer and I am able to locate the coin and pop it out with a gasket scraper. Like I said in a post just today I have popped $120.00 dollars worth of coins out of the ground since July. That TRX pointer already paid for it self.

Would not leave home without one, always carry a back up and also a couple of new decent batteries, although as you have mentioned they are not necessary but i personally find that i can recover a find so much quicker and also reducing the stress aspect when its a small target.

I do. Garrett carrot (propointer AT).
When I was shopping I noticed it was only a little more expensive than the pro pointer II.
I agree it saves alot of time on finding the target.
Worth every dime to me

Some don't seem to like them, but I never leave home without it. IMHO the bare requirements for a serious hunt is a detector, digger, pinpointer and headphones. To each his own, but I always carry the 4 mentioned.

Latest issue of Western and Eastern Treasures shows a guy finding lots of coins around parking meters using a pinpointer.

Haha I agree. I purchased mine right when I got my first detector, but I've tried to not use one.
Heck on your knees when you have to get back up when you're angry from taking handfuls with no beep from the detector and want to see if it's really in the hole lol.

TRX and "carrot". Don't use 'em on really shallow coin targets, but they sure come in handy on stuff deeper than 3", as well as the tiny targets. Using carrot the most lately; perfect fit in the buzz-bomb 2 sheath.

I don't. Yeah, they are a bit pricey for the maybe few minutes they save hunting for a half day or so. Not saying that a few times one would have been handy, not many though. I get along just fine without one. If im going to spend that kind of money, i'll buy a compadre, another coil, or something. $120 - $150 or more for one of them just seems like a rip off for what it actually does. This is just my opinion, i'm not criticizing those who use them, so nobody has to freak out over it... haha

Target recovery is dramatically faster, coin damage less likely and turf damage minimal with a pointer.
If you are a relic Hunter in the woods or in a plowed field I can see where you could get by without one.
I'm a turf hunter. If I forgot my pinpointer I would turn around and go home.
Can't imagine not having one.
If anyone needs one but are short on money and can't afford the big name brand pointers send me a PM.
I have a couple low end cheepos that came with new detectors I will let go real cheap.
Both are new and have never been used. They will get you by until you can get a good one.

Same here, never needed one and never will use one even though i have one.......waste of time for me.

I've been watched many times by parks employees.. They see me detecting, using the pinpointer, then cutting a small plug and pinpointing again, retrieving target then closing the plug. I've been asked about the pinpointer by them on several occasions, where I explain that it'll locate my target (shallow coins, in this case) to within a 1/2" or so, before I even dig. That seems to help with assuring them that I'm not digging huge holes and ripping up "their" park.
Before I got my first pinpointer, a crappy cen-tech from HF, I held handfuls of dirt in front of the coil...what a PITA. Pinpointers are awesome. Get a good one and don't look back.

Yes, and our holes are just as neat as those who do use them. Target in the plug, you have to break it up to get it with a pin pointer just as much as you do without one. I knew some would go over the top justifying why you absolutely must have one because they do.That's why replying to threads like this is so touchy. God forbid you have a different opinion because it will be wrong. I have never had a problem of any kind not using a pin pointer anyplace I have hunted. From parks, nice pristine lawns, to fields, not one single problem and my holes are left just as good. I know it must be just amazing that we are able to do that... lol.

Whatever works for you.. God does not forbid it. You're as right as you think you are, but I wouldn't be without mine and God seems fine with that, too. He even shows me where more coins are and helps support my battery habit... :bouncy:

Not really needed, but a pinpointer sure helps speed me up... Just another tool I can find a good use for, even if some think it merely a luxury. Wouldn't be without my headphones, my bug spray, my "no-see-um" net, my big hat, my digger and sheath, my left glove, kneepads, etc. Sure, all you really need is the metal detector, but you really don't even need that to find stuff in the dirt. It may take you a while longer though... Having the extras is just part of MY hobby.
Guess I'm just a needy kind of guy but I haven't been struck by lightening yet....

BTW - Never take me seriously. You know I'm just bored and playin' 'round; right? I can't be out diggin' today... :(

I can see where they would come in handy. Maybe Mrs.Santa will be good to me and git me one with a Tesoro Vaquero!!!

I can see where some of you guys digging shallow clad wouldn't need a pinpointer.
Most of my detecting is for the deep old coins between 6 and 10 inches.
I skip most targets in the surface to 5" range unless that specific park is producing shallow old coins.
Exception being dime and quarter signals that might be a silver ring.
My coins are rarely in the plug. They are deep in the hole.
The pinpointer helps me retrieve the coin much faster which means more swing time which = more chance of finding an old coin.
I respect those that are good at retrieving coins without a pointer. Definitely a skill that I don't have.

HaHa, No problem Pinenut. I'm just the opposite, like going light. Treat pants and boots with permetherin, spray my hat and neck with off. Wear military pants with the big pockets on the sides. Put finds in one, water and digger in the other. Spare battery if not a new one in the machine. Headphones only at a place where there are people around as to not annoy them with the beeping. Will probably find just as much as you would and no one could tell the difference between your holes or mine. I just get a bit irked when people tell others that they absolutely must have stuff, that I have found, they really don't. I have just as much respect for the code of ethics and property. As far as time, yeah maybe a bit faster with a pointer sometimes. But, do hunt with those who use them and don't see that much of a difference 95% of the time. So as for myself and others, the occasional small bit of saved time does not justify the cost. Anyhow, good luck on your next hunt. Don't mind me either, guess i'm getting grumpy in my older years here. haaha

To each his own. I hunted for 35 + years without seeing the need for one. A few years ago I decided to give a Garrett a try and now wouldn't hunt without one. Not only does it save recovery time, and it really is only a few minutes a hunt, but they greatly cut down the chances of damaging a key date coin. I know I was glad I found the 1896s Barber quarter I recovered with the pin pointer off on the side of the hole then with the tip of my Predator trowel. HH jim tn

All I can say is--I remember all too well what it was like in the old days when we didn't have them.-----I SURE AM enjoying having/using them in my old age now that we have 'em! :)
