Hey tabdog, Terri may be right. Did you oil it or does it have that glossy look? Is it heavier than a normal rock that size? And does a magnet weakly stick to it? I'd hold it and maybe find someone who collects meteorites to tell you the difference between that and plain old iron ore (Magnetite?) Good luck.

Seriously,

I found it in a tot lot today. It was rusty and I buffed it off with a wire brush on a grinder.

It's ferrous metal. It just has a strange shape and texture. I did not oil it or anything, it just looks like that.
