Any significance to ground balancing to 13 (inches?)

Four months ago when I first started with the V3i, I saw a "set up" video on youtube. As the ground was pin pointed, the number 13 flashed in the depth location on the screen. That stuck in my mind because I was never able to see a 13 when I pin pointed for a spot to balance. I never could do better than 6 or 7. At the time, I was searching in the city parks.

I haven't been back to my parks in a couple of months. Lately I've been in higher mineralization, mountain sites with a lot of camping trash. But I can find spots that will flash a 13 inch depth on the screen if I look hard enough. I've also noticed that when I do a GB over these areas (with the tracking turned on), the "depth" numbers will increase as the tracking shifts, and they will increase to 13 if I stick with the pumping. They never go higher than 13, but if I start with a non-13 location, they won't reach 13, no matter how long I pump. This seems to indicate to me that there is something significant about the 13 - but I can't find any mention of it on any of the forums.

Am I missing something obvious? Or am I trying to invent something out of nothing?

I think what it may have referred to was,Finding a clean area to balance at if you can not find a clear spot at 0 then next best is a area that targets show 13 inches. Yazoo

Howdy Yazoo, thanks for the reply.

I'm still on a roller coaster ride with this machine (V3i), and the other day was another low point. I had an 82 year old, first time detecting, friend out with me, and I couldn't pick up a quarter that I buried at about 3 inches. He was using my 5900, and he could see it. I figured it had something to do with my GB, and thus this post. I went out into my sagebrush back yard yesterday and played with the GB . I guess I can get the 13 to show anytime I start to GB in a target free location. I didn't however ever get a "0" to show. Right now I'm probably being overly anal about this GB issue. I probably should use autotrack for a while and see if I get better results. Poor results lead to desperation, and I'm there again. Today I start dieting for a colonoscopy on Thursday - it's going to be a long week.

By the way, does your nickname have anything to do with Big Pink.

Mike is from Indiana so maybe ..... If you are only reading 5 or 6 you are over a target at 5 or 6 inches and you will not get a good G/B. Mike was correct all you are doing is looking for a spot with no junk under the coil, hence the zero or 13 reading. If you lowered your All Metal setting the 13 reading would disappear because the detector would not see the target at 13 inches.

Howdy Rob, and thank you for the input also.

Like I said, the detecting is still a roller coaster ride for me, and the lows are far out numbering the highs. I went out again today, and it was a better day. It was my first time on a freshwater lake beach. I ran a couple of different programs and sensitivities, and I never saw the mineralization go over 18%, so things were at least smooth. I found a couple of clad coins at 7 or 8 inches, and that was better, even though it was dry sand. Targets were somewhat scarce, but so was the trash, and that was a huge change from the camp sites I've been in. (It was a day use only beach.) I only found 2Q, 1N, 5D and 6P, but a small silver "friendship/heart" ring with a jeweler's mark inside saved the day a bit. It was only an inch down. I also was able to get my head out of my butt today and notice the "0" readings as well as the "13s", so maybe better GBs today and in the future? Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for the input.
