Any information from the Minelab Dealer’s meeting?

You're not "OWED" anything. The manufacturer offers his product for sale (with or without hard copy manual) and you buy it or not.. Nothing is "owed".

Technically not. But for running one beyond "turn on & swing" settings it is a necessity. Car co's are pulling the same crap. I bought a Caravan
& it comes with a CD manual. I know 3 people cant get it to play either on better machines than I have. This is 3 diff disks for 2 diff products.
There is also a "quick start guide" abt 100 pages that tells almost nothing. In the paper work I spotted some fine print. It gave an 800 ##
to call & get a real full manual for free. WELL HIDDEN !. Damn thing is as big as bible & is half safety BS that if you dont know you
shouldnt be driving. Sorry for the rant Champ but manuals are a pet peeve with me.

BTW I am NOT an "owed' type person. Many times I have told bums, fake vets, and layabouts to GET A JOB ! I get away with it cause when I
go to the city I bring a "friend" with me & so does my squaw.

best regards

You are saying you got a FULL BOOK owners manual? Or are you calling the quickstart guide the owners manual?

IMHO you are OWED a hard copy manual for the $$ spent.

No, not really. Do you know how many countries ML ships their detectors to? Are they going to print up 20 different languaged manuals and dump them all into the box? Or is your dealer supposed to open and unbox every detector to put a manual into? Can you imagine to liability with that every time someone claims something is missing or broken, it would all go back to the dealer who opened that factory sealed box.

ML does owe you a users manual and they make one available. Every detector I have seen for a long time comes with a quickstart guide and a CD with all the manuals in differing languages.. they also make it available on their website for you to download and print to your hearts desire. But the logistics of putting a full printed manual for a worldwide product into every box is ridiculous.

Quick Start Guide I guess.... I consider Andy's book the real "manual".

Didn't mean to rant on you Tom. Sorry bout that.
I hear the word "owe" so much from some elements of society these days, that it is like waving a red flag at me. I'm happy to help folks that need it so long as they are making their best effort along with me but if they want what they are 'owed' in one hand and spit in the other .........etc etc etc..

I agree that a good manual will help sell a product but as Jason pointed out, the expense of doing one for a metal detector these days will add significant cost to every one of them. It becomes a question of pleasing the majority of your customers and in this day of the Internet, software copies have become the norm of the day. There is a good aftermarket for 2nd party manuals which for my money are better than any factory produced one. But until those some out, we just have to rely on a few folks that really know their stuff like Herschbach, Porter et al.

Any sidenote on the future of the CTX?
Is all development final and no hope of a feature or user interface upgrade?

A very good question, bklein.

Since I think many people see the Equinox as likely to be an excellent complementary machine to their CTX, it would be a great gesture on Minelab's part, after the release of the Equinox, to offer a CTX upgrade. There have been many things suggested over the years that would make for good "tweaks" to the CTX, and some of them would be REALLY easy for Minelab to do. It would really please a lot of Minelab's customers, to offer this first generation of their newest technology (Multi-IQ), and at the same time bring their existing flagship to another level, via an upgrade.

One can hope...

Steve

Since it would cost in excess of 100,000 dollars to fly a load of Equinox from Malaysia to the United States and A steam ship line will charge approximately 2500 dollars I don't think that Minelab is going to fly the machines all over the globe.

Some Very High Value merchandise may bet shipped by air. Some time sensitive merchandise gets sent by air but 99 percent of merchandise ships via steamship.

Since we are speculating on delivery and how it may take place another thing not considered is the profit margin. If ML makes $500 a unit (EQ800) sells 76,000 ,the estimated plane shipment number, wouldn't that be $38,000,000 ? So 100K seems like peanuts.

Get the pre orders in hand quickly and take it from there.

The poster said it could fly 76,000 by weight. I dont think you could get anywhere close to that number by volume.

$500 profit on a 899 machine. NO Way. Maybe on a CTX-3030 but not on an Equinox.

If ML made $500 on $900 I would invest everything I had in ML stock ! Electronics is notoriously low profit.
Example is Zenith Radio Corp. From the '60's through the '80's they sold more TV's both B&W & color than
anyone with a 20-25% market share in the US. They only made a profit a few of those years. Now they are just
a name owned by Gold Star & no longer employ 10,000 + mostly in the Chicago area.
The other problem is quantity. We are all wrapped up waiting but how many are we ?? I would bet < 400 units
would cover the US presold orders.

Tom
LFOD !

ALL speculation obviously. I chose that number due to modern cell phone profit margins. Only the manufacturer knows any of these details.

We are all just guessing.

It serves Minelab to refine the product as long as needed before release. They have mucho riding on this detector after making the September announcement. The fallout that could result from a product released with glitches or any feature set that underperforms software wise could be damaging to them. Who wants to be a beta tester when it's their own money at stake? Maybe it is easier for me to sit back and feel this way because I'm not salivating due to preordering, however I am as anxious as anyone to see real, quantified testing and results from those in this community we share. So if I say the longer the final product takes to reach the end user the better it may be... (I hope).
I spent my life in I.T., this EQ release isn't like say Y2K where there was pressure to meet a deadline....drop dead date. Though we had years to plan and test. I'm just saying getting things right the first time will do more for Minelab than having to patch a product that has already been distributed world wide.
Now I'll start ducking those eggs being thrown at me :puke:

Let's be honest here. Some of the top names in our community have been testing this machine, with some giving up their "tried and true" machines for the Nox. Maybe a marketing ploy, however we will know if it was when the Nox arrives.

Now to the question; Should I pre-order or should I wait?

I pre-ordered, however, for you, your situation may be different. Minelab usually produce quality products. The go-flop was bad, and I knew that as soon as I saw it. So in order to decide here are some questions you should ask yourself:

Can I afford it?

Do I have all the machines I need or is there something lacking?

Do I plan on keeping all my machines or can I sell some to cover the cost of the Nox?

What will fall 2018 look like with/without the Nox?

Is it more important for me to see the machine used by "the average joe" or do I implicitly trust ML and the testers?

These are just some questions to help you reason what you need to do.

Nope...no eggs from here ..couldn't have said it better myself....want it right or at least mostly right the first time out...so if it's late February or when ever , .but of course like most of us can't wait to see that package at my door..and when it does ...the wife better get out of my way because I'll probly have a knife in my hand..

I know what Minelab charges dealers for the CTX. Considering that is where Minelab still makes a good profit, you'd be shocked.

I was not aware that Minelab sold directly to Dealers. I thought that minelab sold to the Distributors and then the Distributors marked them up and then sold the detectors to the dealers.

That is the way that the vast majority or retail is handled. At least that it was the way that it happened during my 14 years in the retail trade.

And that is how the handle distribution worldwide . .. .distributors get their shipments and then they send them to the dealers . . . no direct to dealer shipmernts
