WTH?? Never even HEARD of one with external clappers, if that’s what they’re even called. Google images doesn’t even show one.

Not sure about the bell ,but it sure is cool . Now, what's going on behind it? Looks like alot of great looking coins, I sure wish my soil would allow them to spitshine like that. Congrats on them all,as well as the bell. Very cool

That's neat.

Looks like it broke off something (attachment point top dead center?) so maybe if in a line with more of the same bells it would make a lot noise when being pulled or moving along. Interesting

Well you are west of the Mississippi so maybe it was off an old wagon selling snake oil! Similar to any truck today to attract buyers of ice cream. If you have a FB account there is a page called ‘Id Me’. Post it there and see if any folks respond.
Very cool find!

😃Thanks Pete, I just took a picture of it in my “cabinet of fame” because it had the best lighting. It’s weird, some copper comes out of the dirt pretty good, other stuff is just roasted. Obviously silver always looks pretty good unless I’ve hacked it with the shovel…we won’t display those. What you see in that pic is about 20% of what’s actually in the “good coin” display cabinet. I’ve been fortunate but have also worked very hard at it! Having forums and local friends to pick brains helps ALOT!

Reminds me of a Conestoga bell, never seen the external clappers either. Nice peice!

That’s funny Jeff, that’s exactly what my buddy Anthony said as he saw it come out of the ground…Conestoga! I was running the D2 and 11x13” coil in DHC…it was literally 20” in the ground. The area goes back to the 1840’s so it’s possible the bell is from that time, but I can’t find one like it anywhere with the external clappers.

It looks just like that Ron, like it was on a rack. Maybe the whole rack is down there!😆 I won’t lie, it was ALOT of digging…

Thanks Tony! But I am indeed EAST of the river in southern Wisconsin, no snakes or oil here! Ok, maybe a snake or two. I’ll check that page out!👍👍

Likewise , are the clappers the same size or do you get a different tone with each?

They are the same size and same tone…but that’s a good idea!😃

It could be a burial bell. I saw somewhere where some people would have a bell positioned at the head of their grave with a wire going into the coffin so if they were buried alive they could let someone know by ringing the bell. It apparently was where the expression Saved by the Bell originated. I remember touring a colonial era cemetery where one was actually displayed. That bell appears to be about the same size.

Possible answer is a set of Antique sleigh bells. Are there are any numbers or marks inside them?
