Another 'Underwater' Camera Drowned:rant:

Thanks to everyone who gave such excellent advice.:please: I'll do some further research into underwater cameras and see if there is one that is rugged enough, yet affordable enough to meet my needs. The :cool:Pentax W30 will hopefully come back under warranty and I will use it as a back up in case my new camera fails, whatever that new camera turns out to be.
I need a camera that will be able to survive our round the world trip so shockproof is also an important feature.

Cheers All,

BDA

bdahunter...Did you look at some of the Ikelite housings? If you haven't checked them out in the last couple of years, they have done lots to reduce the size and bulk of them by injection molding them to fit the contour of a specific camera. I haven't held one but it appears it wouldn't be a major issue to have one hanging at your hip.

I fish in the surf here in Washington State. In order to get where the larger concentration of fish are swimming, it's necessary to wade out in the water that's about breast high. Then you get a 'sneaker' and the water really crashes you hard. I always wear one of the Coast Guard Approved inflatable life jackets. It's not one of the automatic inflaters as it would sense trouble all the time and auto inflate after the first wave. My fishing buddies mock me. I don't care!

Got knocked off my feet last year and it was a few seconds before my feet again were on the sand. I hadn't popped the rip cord yet, but was feeling for where it was.

Have you kicked your fear of the water far enough that you'd consider yourself a good swimmer? If not start with a good instructor in a pool and beat it there. Then do the certification thing. An inflatable life jacket does not restrict your movement and might give you some peace of mind.

You certainly find lots of goodies. It sounds like you pay for every one of them. Jim
