Another run at the Arboretum

Took the small coil back up the “enchanted forest” yesterday. This time I started at the opposite end away from the TV station. Ran Field, M1, 6 tone, and Sens was ok at 30.

First item hit was one of those big ol brass rifle cases (F 2 91 head stamp) with VDI 44-45 at 4” deep. Then a 1962 penny at 46 at 5-6” deep. Found a few more 60s pennies and then one 45 cal bullet at 33 at 4-5” deep. So far not a bad start.
Spoke to soon……. Kept hitting 33-34 and they were all the old ring pull tops with beavertail attached at 2-3” deep. Thinking I need to run F75 back in there and see if pull tops are that close to big ol lead bullets??? I believe the sound of the tone varies slightly but not real sure.
Managed to find three clad dimes at 46 at 4-5” deep and in the soil conditions here they come out looking like silver, its odd that way but this soil is a dream to dig in. One hit at 48 I dug I think is a broken half of an Army Artillery badge (crossed cannons), still trying to confirm!
Once I was getting closer to the TV station the chatter started up so I need to go “spin the knobs” and see if I can overcome that. One surprise find was a flattened aluminum beer can at 3” deep, basically a preserved Lucky Lager brand with the beavertail style pull top (Lucky went out of business in the states in the early 80s, now in Canada as bought by Molson).
Nothing spectacular I know but still finding the goodies!

In your other post, I read 4khz helped with emi. It may be what you have to do here as you get closer to the TV station. I’m sure those pesky ring pulls are masking good targets. Sounds like there are thousands of them where you are hunting.

Ron, have you tried backing down just the sensitivity to see where the chatter stops? I’m sure you’ve played with all the buttons by this point, lol. Running 1.7 update?

Have not been back to the arboretum to run lower freqs, yet. Matt, had to turn Sens down to 15 in M1 mode to get chattering to stop enough to make it bearable. 07 updated…..
This Old Arboretum, as they refer to it, was home to the Blue Mountain Rock Festival back in the 60s so tons of beavertails and cheap wine screw caps. Thinking next attack plan will be either 4 or 8khz and see how close I can get to Public Tv!!!!! Finding that Indian gives me hope there ate still a couple goodies in there.

As far as trying to mitigate EMI by changing from multi to single frequency, this certainly is a viable option. Another good option that has worked well for me is to run in Beach mode MD or even MW. It does well, especially in difficult ground.

I shall give that a try, but isnt it running only in 20 and 40 khz?

My understanding is that MD is weighted toward lower frequencies than M1, and MW is weighted even lower. All 3 hit mid & high conductors well. MW does seem to have the most filtering & hits softer. I wish NM would give us more information on this aspect as it would help in setting the detector up for different site conditions.
