Andy S. and all other concerned E-Trac users...Help

Thats the way I run mine too except minor changes. Vari and limits both 29. Why?? Just because! ha ha I have it in my head you should never max anything out. Gain 20 because I like to be able to hear the depth difference in the coin. Regular pinpoint.

I went out today and only scored one wheatie. I was in HEAVY iron (nails)! I knew it was a good target but tried every adjustment I could think of to make it sound better. Coins mode with the above settings made it sound off the best. I even went manual sens and bumped it up a bit. Auto sens made it sound the best. I think auto sens must do something other than just adjust the sens.

Suppose to be nice out tomorrow too. Ill be out at it again trying to learn more.

Did I mention I REALLY like this machine??? lol

Thanks JC, I run the same exact settings, but with threshold at 15. Thanks for the reassurance stoopstroop! Now let's tear it up this year!!

I'll give an answer that is at best an educated guess on my part, so take it with a grain of salt. I have no electronics background and probably only 75 hours on the ET.

That being said, I believe "see through" iron is stated often, but is a misleading phrase. I have found good targets mixed with iron, but the iron was always small and never shallower than the good target. So I believe that the ET is very good at picking out good targets in the iron, but like all detectors, good targets can be masked. I think the ability to pick up the good among the bad is a function of the size of the good target, size of iron, depth of good target, and depth of iron. For example, little good target deeper than big iron target; ET is not going to see it. Big good target shallower than little iron target; ET is going to see it. Then the response given for every target combination between these two extremes is based on the relation of the size and depths of the targets. At some point in the relationship the iron signal will over power the good signal from being received.

Hopefully Andy will post an answer, he is much more knowledgeable than I am. He may tell me I need to put the training wheels back on...LOL.

BTW, I have a much easier time picking out targets in trash using 4 tones instead of multi.

Hi Digger !

Your post is one of the most perceptive and accurate contribution I've read on these forums, relating to the so called 'iron see through' phenomena.

Particularly ".....I believe "see through" iron is stated often, but is a misleading phrase"

The conclusions you present are spot on.

You say that you don't have an electronics background, but I'll lay odds on my assumption that you must practice logical thinking in what ever field of work you are engaged.

My respects to you, and I look forwards to your future contributions on the E-Trac...........TheMarshall.

Digger.....I'm sure Andy would hav been more than happy to pin your post on the inside leading cover of his book, should the opportunity have been available before going to print.

Nothing beats field testing using iron and other items such as nails, coins, jewelry, etc., whatever you may be hunting for or think you may encounter in the field. When you test, you can overlay items, bury them at different levels or one beside other, etc. until you begin to familiarize yourself with the various tone and ID responses around iron so you can see for yourself the abilities and limitations of the ET. Takes a little of your time, but you come away a much better hunter.
