Had a couple hours so went back up to the AdLawn to try out a new sweep technique. Covered an area 50’ long by my sweep width twice (up and back). Several iron nails 5-7” deep but no coins. It was pushing 8:45 and getting dim and I was back at the car but still had 15-20 minutes of light. Looked across the street and saw a low shrub hedge line that separates the street from a paved parking lot. Several years back (50 plus) there was a womens hall there, it was either was torn down or burned down. I figured the strip by the street was probably still original.
I quickly switched coils from the bigger one I had on and put the factory 5” on. Walked across the street and figured I could slip this coil into and below the areas where the bushes were not “solid”. At this point I figured 5-10 minutes left of light. Second point I went in I got a good sharp dime chime about 4-5” deep. I had to push my arms in just a bit to dig the plug and to get the pinpointer in and it set off, grabbed a handful of dirt and out pops silver!!! Recheck hole and slight buzz indicating on right side of the hole so cut another slice out of the plug. Now I get a solid buzz so grab a handful of dirt again. Yup, ditto!!! Two silver Rosie’s about 3-4” apart. Took me a second to get the dates but one was 63 and the other 64..
Moved to the next hole to push in and bam, solid quarter signal showing the same depth. Dig, buzz, scoop, grab, what the heck is this, no quarter that I recognize. Now its dark enough I cant really see so tried to use the tiny led light on the pinpointer but that didnt really help a whole lot. I could read One Schilling on top and 1917 on the bottom. Ok, whaaaaaaat? Gather up and head home.
Get home and sure enough I have a 1917 Australian Schilling. Text Jeff, I cant repeat that conversation here…... Ya see, he found that Walking Liberty near by, he did check the parking strip, but didnt push a coil into the low bushes. Yup, last coin of the night!
