An interesting encounter....

oldranger

New member
went off this am to a local county park
that i KNOW had a lot of use over the
holiday weekend..

Found 50 cents in the parking lot before i
even turned tector on .. got 1.01 total in the ground

The park was REAL mucky we had a HUGE storm last nite
a county Police officer drove by waved and went on..
Then came around and parked next to my truck and got out
He asked me to do him a favor and not dig much over a few inches
even tho wet ground was good for :detecting:
He askd about the ACE and said his Bounty hunter wasnt
all he hoped it would be ..I let him swing the ace and NO KIDDING

A few seconds and a few steps he finds a silver earing ..
I did let him keep it....
I may have a new tector buddy, and it cant hurt to know a Police officer anyway

Seems like a goofy story but isnt that what :detecting:is
all about? Not knowing whats next ....

Ha ha. Maybe you'll be called into CSI work to find bullets! :)

Great story, by the way! Hope next time you get a nice prize.

Thats good.
Better to have them on your side:thumbup:

:usaflag:Can't hurt to have The Fuzz on your side.

I'm waiting for the local school to get out for the summer...this thursday should be their last day. Then I'm hitting the virgin turf....football field...playround. I'm positive that this place has never been detected...but...I'm going in with low expectations anyways.

Hey it never hurts to have the Long Arm of the law for a hunting bud or a bud for that matter (my next door neighbor is a
Texas Highway Patrolman). Maybe he will go out and buy an Ace 250 !!

The more friends you make the less enemies you have. Good pr, ron. Most people would have insisted he give them the item he found, but you were very generous. I personally would have gave it to anyone who let me use their detector, but good things happen to generous people and I hope you are rewarded for your generosity.

And asking you not to dig very deeply is something we can understand and respect concidering the muddy conditions. A different officer may have just told you to pack it up and scram but the reasoning the officer used was one I can agree with.
sounds like the kind of person I would like to have as a huntin' buddy.

I mean... is there a law against detecting or is it against the law to disturb the ground or is he making up rules? I mean, either it is ok the dig or it's not. If I am in a nice park or on a lawn I carry a terry dishtowel and if I gig a little deeper than usual I pile the dirt on the towel. I recover my target and then I replace some of the soil and tamp it down, then some more, until finally I finish. It looks no different than any other hole... sometimes better... is the difference? Maybe you should see what sort of recovery skills the officer has, maybe they aren't very good.

So is it against the law to dig or not?

I don't know... maybe it's just me.

Julien

I think he ( and I) just didnt want a mess..

I won dig very deep if its realy mucky..

saves the turf and I dont get as messy!!!

I can always come back anohter day

Nice bit of a story Ron.
To be honest, if I see someone swinging a detector around town; if I'm not in a rush, I will always go over and say hello. I don't see many folks using one, but have in my last few hunts at my favourite site, been joined by a local who has just gotten into the hobby and lurks around Findmall. ( I did sugest he join, but he declined.) That's how I met one of the chaps in the local detecting club. He'd just recovered an 1878 US silver trade dollar! It was through that meeting that I gained a friend and learned of the local detecting club (even though they mostly only hunt gold, which is not my thing.)
Mick Evans.
