Nice find Tony! How deep was she?

I'd say around six inches. I was using my Minelab 8" DD. Lots of trash in this area. I think this area is where they used to burn trash and toss things.

I've been detecting this place for about 20 years and have only found 2 mercs and one silver Washington. Found maybe 10 wheaties. Farmers must have been poor as snot.

Nice find Tony welcome back to MDing! I cant wait to get back out there myself maybe this Saturday! The silver quarters for me have been afar and few between I need to start hunting homes, that will be my new endeavor for this summer.

Hey Explorer se, thanks for the welcome!
I just tried out the 12x 13 Tornado coil on my SE. It's quite a bit heavier than my stock coil. Since I haven't hit on any deepies, can't know how good it is for that. Yes, it would be great to hunt homes. What state do you live in?

I live in Southern California unfortunately, I get jealous when I see what everyone is finding on the right coast. Maybe Ill retire out there someday and hopefully find some leftovers that everyone leaves me! lol! its nice to see you posting on the Explorer Forum as it gets kind of quiet around here especially since the E trac and CTX have been born. HH Tony! Look forward to some more of your finds!

Any silver is good. Today I may spend some time at an old house that is across from a church that was built in 1904.

I used to live in Southern California in Canyon Country which is about 50 miles north of LA back in the 80's. I'd fly out to CA for business in the 90's and bring my Explorer XS with me. Found lots of goodies at the beach.

I put on my new 12 x 13 Tornado coil last night on my SE and took it out to my coin garden hoping it would hit my deeply buried coins. I buried them in the 1990's so they may have sunk further. The only coin I could pick up with my quarter. It's around 8" deep.
I was kind of bummed about that. I may have to excavate those other coins and see if I can find them. I don't see how I can get any more depth with my detector. I run sens around 28 if it's not chattering and my threshold just to where it is hearable. I use not quite an open screen for iron. I have about 1/4 inch width bar on the left for iron. I don't have coins checked. Sometimes I run "Deep" on.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
In this yard where I live, often the threshold goes silent for several seconds. I have to wait for it to return then go again.

Update on the Tornado coil I just read the directions on ground balancing with the Tornado coil. It says to lower your sens to half, then ground balance and then move your sens up to where it's not chattering. So I will have to try this after work to see if it helps.

Oh yeah we were neighbors I live in Valencia oh wow there are some spots that are old out here, where do you now live? I will head to the beaches next month. I also see that you got the Tornado coil, please let me know how it works with your XS. I also have one, I bought a used one plus I have the Ultimate coil. I need to do some experimenting on my end.

What settings do you use on your Explorer SE?

Sure I use:

Tone section-
Threshold 5
Variability 10
Limits 10

Volume section-
Max Limits 10
Gain 6-
Sounds section- Ferrous

Options section-
Response Normal
Recover Fast and Deep are usually both OFF.

I use Manual Sensitivity which I believe will get more depth in just about every situation when used accordingly

Why use ferrous? Doesn't that cause Ferrous to ring high tone?

No the opposite, ive just gotten used to it. I was digging up more iron in Cond I have an E trac as well and I run that on Cond.

Why do you use ferrous on one but conduct on E trac?

I was digging more iron in Cond than I was in the ferrous setting because in ferrous it produce a lower sound for more of the iron than the Cond. I can then discern if I want to dig up a good sound based on the audio or pass on the target because Ferrous is not 100% foolproof, albeit it is good for me, regardless of which of the two that you choose, you still get Cond's high pitch sound. So it is more of a numbers game for me it reduces unwanted signals more in essence.

The Etrac is a completely different machine from the Explorer and I use the multi tones and the Cond works better for me. I am able to hear the high tones better.
