Ahh the joys of urban parks-Minor assault on me & my doggie today!

hey prep1957, when Chicago elects Rahm, dont worry about it. You will have to join a treasure hunters union, be card checked, the mafia will issue you a permit to hunt the parks for a cut, and illinois taxes will take the rest, and the federal govt will insist we buy all metal detectors from China! i have wondered when the infernal revenuers service will start making us pay taxes on our finds! look what the great Mel Fisher went through uncovering history! seriously, you guys check the local ordinances on parks. our town in Georgia has hours for the parks, Knife ordinances, dog ordinances, etcccc. still the question of the "Is it a digging tool or a weapon? and yes, i have seen a lot of malicious prosecution as a cop, on a person that defended himself. I retired, now work for the defense as an investigator and see the one side investigations. two thugs going at it aint really a crime, Its good riddance. buts its all up to a jury. and yes, you can be aquitted for spraying the guy in criminal court, and writing him payments from the ruling for the plaintiff in civil court.

Sounds like pepper spray should be added to your hunting tool kit. I added it to mine after a rather frightening encounter with a dog. Neither one of us were hurt but it scared the you know what out of me.

Hunting alone in local park. Hear dog barking. Turn just in time to see this teed off dog charging right at me, only a few feet from getting to me. I raised my detector up to defend myself and hollered at the dog. He did not expect that and became confused. Stopped dead in his tracks but continued barking at me. I backed up all the way back to my car keeping the dog in sight the whole time.

If I had an encounter like you did I could not say how I would have reacted. Glad you kept your cool. Hope your dog is not injured. I would tag the guy in small claims court for the damage to your detector and any injuries to your dog. Probably a leash law where you live.

Be safe.
