Advice on hunting in the woods?

I am flying into O'Hare on the first of April. I wish I had time to get some detecting in!

Almost all of my good finds come from wooded areas. With a little research and some luck you never know what you will find. The following is an excerpt from a trail guide that led me to numerous old coins, bottles, buttons and old copper jewelry:
