Advice on AT pro purchase for a Tesoro guy

BillZ

New member
Hey all,
I am primarily a Tesoro guy who is considering an AT Pro as a complimentary addition to my Vaquero.
In the past I have hunted with a White's XLT for a year, so I have experience with TID/multiple tone machines. When hunting with a beep only machine, I find that I dig more and find more non-coin goodies. I am happy with my Vaquero and it performs well up to about 8" in my ground.

The reason I am considering another TID machine, specifically the AT Pro is because recently I have had short, one day opportunities to hunt in some areas with a lot of potential. A TID machine would be easer to cherry pick goodies in an old homesite or park that is full of junk and when I have a limited amount of time. I want a second machine for those places.

Also, the waterproof option is a big bonus because there are several water places I have access to that I would love to hunt.

My questions/concerns are more for AT Pro users that have Tesoro and/or XLT experience but anyone is welcome to put in their opinion.

Has anyone been able to compare the AT Pro with and XLT or a Tesoro with Ground Balance? Ideally I would like to get better depth with my next detector purchase.

Should I be very concerned buying a used AT Pro because of the quality issues? Are there things I should ask before buying a used unit?

I would also like to have the next machine as a backup for my wife's Tesoro. She is not one who is interested in programming or fiddling with a complicated machine. Is the AT Pro good for simple turn on and go hunting?

TIA
_Bill

Bill I would say the AT Pro is one of the most underrated machines for all the features it brings but all the guys on this forum know this! lol The Iron audio feature is an cool feature.

Make sure you get a new version AT Pro. I haven't had one of those come back to me bad. I have a fall special on my site right now that is really a great deal.

Feel free to give me a call for more info or a good deal! Love to help answer any questions you may have.

Thanks, Bart

I had a Tesoro about 10 years ago, I sold it and recently bought the AT Pro. Never looked back. Tesoro makes very nice machines, great warranty, but no one makes an all terrain machine that isnt PI.

The AT Pro works in salt water and fresh water as well as on land. Look around, I dont think anyone else sells such a machine-that is one that has such good discrimination.

How do you know the difference in the older and newer version.. I thought an AT Pro was an AT Pro.. So how can you tell the difference???? This is news to me..

n/t

The newer version has plastic collar locks at the pole joints to prevent shaft wobble, and the elbow rest is a bit farther from the box for more comfortable searching and better balance. The warentey is transferable(so i've heard). Talk to a dealer about a new one, then decide new or used. The at pro is 2 machines in one--water hunter, and tid land hunter. In the pro mode even the stock coil will find coins in trash rather well ( has a quicker response than the std mode). Download a manual from garretts web site
and read it that will give you a bit more insight, if you choose to get one you wont regret it--its a dandy-- thats my exspierience.

Thanks, I will do that..
But after one has had the upgrade is there any way to tell it from the newer one??
Appreciate your replies..

If you decide on a used machine, ask what the serial # is. The early ones started with 50, and I believe the later ones start with 51. If it's a 50... serial, ask if it went back to Garrett for the upgrades. They added the cam locks on the shaft, lengthened the top section of the shaft, bench tested/adjusted them to ensure that they are working properly, pressure tested for leaks, and in some cases, replaced the coil. Upgraded units also have a sticker on the bottom of the control box that says "warranty extended to ??/2013". So, you'll know if you have an upgraded unit.

I sent mine in a while back and couldn't be happier with the upgraded AT Pro.

Thanks William, getting one right after Christmas.. :))

Thanks William..

If it has cam locks and extended back arm.

Thanks Bart..

Hi Bart ,
I see on this forum that guys have complained about having a less sensitive AT Pro after having sent the earlier machines in for the update .... Since you have had both early and newer machines , are you seeing a less sensitive newer machine when you get them in , or are they as powerful as the older machines ? .....I'm leary about sending in my older machine as I don't want it detuned, but the good features that are offered are hard to beat , especailly the extended warranty ......Thanks , Jim

I'm concerned also as to the difference in the 2, if there is a noticeable difference between them.. has anyone actually done any testing between the 2, After upgrades?? Spend that much money I want which ever is the better of the 2.. Just saying.. Thanks for any replies addressing this..

I don't have a scientific answer, but I did a quick air test with clad quarter the other day (after reading about the concerns) and got a solid 11" and intermittent 12".
FWIW

Thanks William, but was that on an updated one or the newer one??

I bought a new one from Bart just a few days ago. Also ordered the 8" coil with it. So far I've only used the small coil. This thing goes deep and really hammers. Great in heavy trash. I'm really pleased so far. Thanks Bart.

Thanks for all the replies, I can't wait..

Hello Bill,
I happen to have two AT Pros, one upgraded the other not. I've layed one up for the winter but when I get a chance I plan on firing both up and doing some air testing. I too read the reports of decreased sensitivity following the upgrade and was curious to see what I get with both of my machines. BTW, they both run great now. I did have problems with one and sent it in for the upgrade and repair.

That's what I like about Garrett, they'll make it right, no matter what it takes.. JMO..
