Advice for a V3i newbie?

Greetings all. Have used an XLT, then DFX for several years and had many good finds (favorite - 1785 8 reale Spanish dollar). Finally pulled the trigger and ordered the V3i and should be in tomorrow. Mostly hunt in town parks and schools - some trashy. Would like to add some gold jewelry to my collection. Have already checked out some of the programming tips, and found the "magic" program. Tried many different programs with the DFX with varying success. Any advice on getting started would be appreciated. BTW - great forum!

Use the C/J program or the Hi Pro. There is nothing really special about Magic'(Doug) program. It is closest to a modified Hi Pro. I run one close to Doug's, mostly different tones. The V programs a hot out of the box, the DFX programs were tame. I wouldn't go wild with changes until I got a few hours under my belt.[attachment 188014 ani_einstein.gif]

Dont be afraid to run the gain at 1-3. I found a pocket watch at 8" yesterday running the gain at 1. This was 2-3 feet away from a buried power line that gives off tremendous emi. The quieter it runs the better. It those clean fields and wooded areas you can crank the gain up to find what every one else passes by.

The gain at 1-3 is the equivalent of detectors from just a half dozen years ago and you will get much better separation.

I see a lot of posts saying that the RX gain does not impact the depth, especially at higher levels. I totally disagree. There is definitely a noticeable difference in the signal even from changing the RX from 11 to 13. Run as high as the sucker will go while maintaining stability of the detector. I run my RX as high as 14 if possible with my Sensitivity at 94 ( Disc) and 74 (All Metal).

Hi John, Your not a newbi to Detecting so i Like Hi Pro, Its Hot right out of the box so keep to preset 4R a wile till you get used to the V , I Like to use a 5.3 coil,
Find someone that has a V3i to help
Mickfin, Good Luck

Nothing special here........I'M new to the V3i to....and I use the 950 coil & 5.3 coil ...... with the Stock Coin & Jewelry program for hunting my Local parks / sports fields

with only 6 hours of use so far and only one soccer field....... I have found 7 Rings and one necklaces ...OK 3 of the Rings were junkers, but the other 4 were the real thing..... GOLD

I still have the other half of the soccer field to hunt ........ Regardless of all the scans/ sizing/ polar plots/ spectrograph's

One Must dig all VDI'S from the foil to the Zinc range......... there's just no getting around from this...... if your after the GOLD

Good luck

Hi all,
Thanks for the great tips and advice. Had a couple hours last Saturday to try out the V3i. Found a WB and a couple bucks of clad near a high school with lots of trash. One annoying thing I found was that at each end of my sweep I got a very high tone (using coin/jewelry program), but when I tried to pinpoint there was nothing there. Not sure if it was due to VDI wraparound, or so much chopped up aluminum trash. Tried reducing gain a couple of times with little change. Hopefully I can try a cleaner spot this weekend to see if the trash was causing my problem. Thanks again.

That chopped can slaw can drive a person crazy. If it consistently VDI's at 94-95 just zero tone those or give them a lesser tone.

May try slowing your swing speed some and be sure your coil is staying flat/parallel at the ends of each sweep - hope you get 'er figured out. GL and HH

I'm a newbie to the V3i as well, so I'm going to ask what may seem to be a ignorant question. Most of the programs I see in the manual run the RX gain at 6 to 12. Is the gain you refer to running at 1 to 3 the same as RX gain and if so, why would you lower this unless you're running a smaller coil?
