Ace 250

Well, I made the plunge and purchased a 250, and have had it about a week, and i like it very well, however the belltone is different and will take some getting used to. My 550 and 750 is much more clear when it signals a coin. Do any of you notice this difference or is it just my ears getting older. I bought it as a backup, but i am afraid it will become my number one detector. I am having a little trouble with the pinpointing, i dont seem to be as accurate with this machine yet. Anyone have any suggestions to help here. It seems like i am having to dig a bigger hole than necessary. My other two are right on target. Sure glad to be back posting again, its been a long time. Puter problems! Thanks, jery

The pinpoint on a 250 is a little different, suggestion, bury a coin, stick a golf tee on top of it and practice, this will show you where the coin is.

Jery: Took the maiden voyage yesterday with my 250 and experienced what you have been with too large of holes dug. It did get better after an hour.

Thanks BOB in TX for the Golf Tee tip; gonna just do that today and see what happens. There have been varying suggestions as to where on the coil the exact pinpoint spot is. Perhaps each coil has a bit different personality from others, thus the different suggested spots.

Mine seemed to find the best pinpoint just in front of where the stem connects to the coil.

on shallow targets pinpoint like a double DD, using the "walkback waggle". Do the same with deeper targets but the target pinpoints closer to the center of the coil.

Actually I like the Belltone. It's the pleasant sound of money. This forum and its archives are full of tips on pinpointing plus the Garrett site has an animation showing how.

Yeah for every inch deeper than about three inches the honey spot moves back an inch. Then there's always the 90 degree trick.

I just got one and love it! But when I bring it back toward me in pinpoint mode, wait until the sound drops off and dig, the target seems to be an inch or two in front of the coil. This is doing the double "punch" pinpoint.

The Sniper coil pinppoints at center, none of this forward and back stuff that is needed on the stock coil. Just "X" the signal and the target will be dead center. No need to even use the pinpoint button on the 250 with that little coil, but you do have to do your "X-ing" at a pretty quick coil sweep, in short "whipping" strokes tends to work best. With a little practice, you should be able to pinpoint a coin and have in out of the ground in less than 20 seconds. A good coinshooter in a well producing location can average one coin per minute or minute and a half, and even better on sand with a good coin scoop. If you've never been to one, try to locate an organized (planted) hunt on an ocean beach some time. Keep your eye on the guys slinging sand like a whirlwind..... ;)

Actually, I think John's pictorial is actually either showing the 1350 coil or the 250's larger coil. On the stock coil, all is the same except when the sound stops, your target will be in the front arc between the inner coil and the outer coil.

Hope that makes sense!

Only on deeper targets. Shallow targets will be right where the pic shows it. As targets get deeper the honey spot moves back towards the center of the inside oval, about an inch for every additional inch of depth. Due to the winding configuration of the oval coil it pinpoints a lot like a DD.

THe Sniper is a round coil and being small pinpoints entirely different, almost like a pinpointer. When you locate a target just back off the target, press pinpoint and move back over the target and twitch the coil around until the loudest response is right in the center of the coil.

Well, took the Yeller feller out today and found $3.00, but am still not too good a pinpointing. I got so bad that i would pinpoint with the 550 to keep from digging too large a hole. I am just not good at it yet. Is it as accurate as the 750 and 550? I tried the middle of the coil and the inside ring at the tip. Hit some, but missed on way too many. Heck, i gotta get better, cause i like it better than the 550 and 750. Jery

Bill, the point I was trying to make was that the coil pictured in John's pictorial is not the Ace 250's stock coil.
