ACE 250 Kellyco 10 x 14

Member
Well I was away in washington over the last 6 days on vacation and for a buddies wedding. Before I left I opted to try out the Kellyco 10X14 coil. I took it out and did not realize how dam big it was going to be :surprised: I proceeded to check it out and air tested it from the stock 250 coil. I was getting about 3 more inches on air. I then decided to test it outside the house in a small patch I had gone over numerous times with the stock coil and right away was nabbing signals and digging coins. I nab about 4 and then deciced to go hit the very first park I ever tried.

Went out to the park and boy can you cover ground with this size coil. I was cruisin along and grabbing coins all over the place. I was even digging less junk as I could read the signals better with this coil. I was only there for 45 minutes and dug 63 coins!!! I only pulled 8 junk tabs and foil. I was simply amazed how good this coil was working for me.

And pin pointing with this is even easier than the stock coil. Go along till ya get good signal. Swing over it then pinpoint to highest side to side and then draw back till it fades to nothing and bam right at nose of coil everytime!!!!! I felt like an old pro out there with this coil. Just worked flawlessly. :detecting:

Here is the catch of the day

3 quarters
3 dimes
2 nickels
55 pennies

And also when this coil is over a mess of 6 coins it goes beserk lol

Another note for some odd reason when I tested it with a gold ring it gained 4 inches over stock. My stock coil would only reach gold at about 4 this grabs it at 8" plus

Very happy with coil. Its like a new machine.

Hi Stix.
I'm curious.
You mentioned that you could read the signals better than with the stock coil. I was wondering if you could put into words as to how you could tell targets apart with this coil?
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

Well for trash items it would really bounce around especially on foil. I could get a good read on the signal/sound and confidently say it was foil or pulltab. It seems a bit more accurate on the readout as to what is under the ground. Except for rusted bottlecaps always show as 50 cent peices dead ringer. I got good separation even between close targets in same hole. One hole it was bouncing between 1 cent and 25 cent and sure enough there was a penny and a quarter in the hole. When multiple coins under the coil it sings like a bird. I know this has to do with the control head for recovery time but using this coil its like you are using 2 coils.

Like when I pinpoint I can start to pinpoint on left and will get a signal to full then fade then start to go right back up in the middle part of coil. Not sure if I an explaining well, but I can distiguish between trash and coins/jewelry alot better. I airtested gold and would get a more accurate reading depper than I would with stock. Stock coil will give a solid nickel to 4" then bounce a bit deeper. The 10x14 with give a dead nickel sound till it stops no bounce down Dunno to 8"

Pulltabs on old coil would ring coin alot of time and on new coil they bounce all over at a faster rate and tells me its junk. Dunno if its the double coil like action its doing or what but I can just read the signals easier.

Oh yeah!:detecting:I luv it, too!:thumbup:That knife edge is sharp, right down the middle of the double"D". ALOT lighter than the Garrett double"D"s on my CX, GTI & LS. Fun, fun fun!!!:twodetecting: Happy Hunting!:)

Thanks for the info on this coil. I'm thinking about splurging for it and would like to know anyone else's comments on it. Would I see much of a difference between it and my 9x12 Ace 250 coil?

I am not sure if you would notice a difference from the 9x12 as I never tried that coil. All I do know is I really like this coil and since I am backed up with work from the vacation I have no time to use it at the moment and its killing me. I thought about bringing it but thought better after the wife gave me a look as I grabbed it :stretcher:

Thanks for that.
I find the DD coil on the GTI to be much better at telling targets apart than the imaging coil as well. If I trusted the imaging, I'd be leaving a fair few of our Aussie $1 coins behind, thinking that they were screw caps. I agree with you about the audio. It's at it's best with a DD coil on.
There's a lot to like about the Ace, but the audio drove me to distraction with it's blunt abrupt tones, causing me to glaze over and miss targets. If DD coils help out there, then it would be worth considering buying another one again down the track.
I look forward to reading more of your posts when you get back out with it again. Finding the time can be a challenge sometimes.
Good luck.
Mick Evans.

Hi,
Are you using this coil on a Ace 250?...I didnt know you could use coils other than what was made for the unit you have....So putting this coil on my Ace 250 would make it even better?

Another question about this coil - is it waterproof like all the other coils? The answer would seem obvious, but I don't want to find out the bad way... :help:

The 10"x14" for Ace 250 is an Excellerator coil sold by KellyCo. It's made for the Ace 250 by Excellerator. It's not made by Garret and it is not the same as the 10"x14" searchcoils made by Garrett for CX,GTI and LS machines. It is much lighter. Then again, I don't think that it is epoxy filled like the Garrett coils(which are virtually indestructable). Happy Hunting!:)

Unfortunately, I don't believe that the Excellerator coils are SUBMERSIBLE like the Garrett seachcoils are. However, they are waterproof. Meaning that they can be used in the rain and wet grass. I, myself, would not go dipping the Excellerator under water. Just my two cents worth.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

I used mine in the river underwater without any problems. Its says waterproof and water resistant is wet grassy and rain.

A while back, when I got my 5" Excellerator search coil for my GTI 2500, I spoke with Raul at KellyCo. He informed me that the Excellerator coils are not submersible, but can be used in rain and wet grass. I assume this applies to the 10"x14" double "D" Excellerator made for the Ace. Happy Hunting:)

tested mine out while I left for the day sunk it in a fish tank left it there for 8 hours today turned it on and tetsted it works fine. Again they advertise as waterproof not water resistant. Otherwise they are false advertising a product.

I did tho before I hooked mine up was I used teflon tape around the threads of the coil.

When I called and talked to them they said waterproof. Not sure what to think here.......

Hey, Stix, thanks for letting me/us know.:happy:I'm gonna see how well it handles the salt water at the beach!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

I'd be interested to hear the difference between the two. If you ever get a chance to try a 9x12
and can compare it with the 10x14, I'd sure like to hear a review. Maybe someday you
will run into someone that has the big coil and can let you try it for a test.
I'd let you borrow mine if you were local.. :/
In theory, the 10x14 should do about one inch more.. But I'm curious to see if it does.
The performance of the various coils is pretty linear to the size. And.. on the ace 250,
it seems you get about an inch of depth for every inch of diameter.
IE: the 6.5x9 gets 7-8 inches.. The 9x12 gets 10-11 inches, etc.. That 10x14 oughta
get about an inch more at say 11-12 inches if it's tuned and working right. From your
reports, it sounds like it's doing pretty well.

i got a 1920 standing liberty quarter at 12" just yesterday with 10x14 on a beach. i find the bigger coil is a little harder to pinpoint with. and you will fill the difference in weight.
