Accuracy test of the GPS Features on the CTX 3030.

I know for a fact that google maps got updated within the past year in my area making my previous findpoints go way off track. Some of them went from being in the middle of yards to in the middle of houses. Others went from being in the middle of fields to in the middle of the woods. They update the satellite data (maps) every other year. I figure the maps shifted in my area due to more detail being added or sensored areas being revealed.

When they first started using WAAS it was limited to the coast areas and as your map shows the majority of the coverage is still along the coast lines in the lower 48. Dont see much coverage in the central usa and im sure you can correct me but at one time the coveragewas limited to somthing less than 200 miles which may explain why the east coast is covered so heavily. WAAS was mostly designed for marine navigation hense the heavy east coast coverage.

WAAS was developed for civil aviation. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/techops/navservices/gnss/faq/waas/

The WAAS specification requires it to provide a position accuracy of 7.6 metres (25 ft) or better (for both lateral and vertical measurements), at least 95% of the time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAAS

The WAAS specification mandates availability as 99.999% throughout the service area.

Thanks for clearing that up Digger. I had been away from much use of that info. for several years. Do see there has been some changes since first implemented which is good.

After all this talk i think i will spend some time with the GPS on the CTX and compare it to my handheld units. Quick question is the CTX Gps WAAS compatiable?

Yes, The CTX 3030 can switch the GPS receiver between two states...normal GPS and Enhanced. Selecting

My GPS on the CTX is pretty accurate. I can return back to a spot within 6 feet. The maps are close, but atheletic fields have always shifted looking at the map. The light posts I marked were correct. After looking at some google historic maps I noticed they changed the location of the lined fields. So one has to ask how old is the areial view? Did they move the lines?
