Scott and i headed out in the snow to do some digging and maybe find the twin of the shilling we found a week earlier.:yikes:i tamed the explorer to my liking[thank you Brian;)]and away we go.
i got a nice button, then i got a old copper that was severely notched.:cry:it was pretty worn so if it had been intact i dont think it woulda mattered in i.ding it.Scott was the button king today.he got some nice big colonials and a couple flat buttons.he'll have to post the goods he found it was quite a haul.before we left i found a small copper that the patina washed away from the snow.sad to see it just disinigrate in my hand.:unsure:it was beat so i put the steel wool to it and it turned out to be a 1806 draped bust half cent.
so no heart attacks today, but we still got enough goodies to keep us coming back for another try.

.... supposed to warm up agin this week. Lows in the 50's highs upper 70's. Still a bit chilly for detecting in shorts but I'll manage.

it's been a heat wave around here.:hot:digging in january is a treat.
tell me if you had a chance to detect in a 300+ year old field, would you wait til spring?remember now,the grass is knee high by june and the bugs are thick by that time.:lol:and besides what the heck are we gonna do to cure the cabin fever.:nopity:
you'd be right there with us if ya lived here.old man winter doesn't throw too many bones to us in the winter time, this year he's being generous.:angel:dig em while you can,it beats digging the hard hit beaches.;)

Hey Todd... do you know the history on that field? was there once a town there or something ?
Snow hunting sucks if you're doing it by yourself but I'vew done it a few times with friends and had a blast every time.
I used the clear produce bags from the grocery store to cover the detector... keeps the electronics dry no matter how crappy it gets..

Awesome pic.. thanks for taking us with you !
Mike

the house in front of the field is an old tavern from the 1700's.it is also situated where the first colonies were set up .back then there was no maine,it was northern massachusetts .and from where we keep digging musketballs we figure it was a muster field in the 1700-1812 era.coins, buckles, and buttons support this theory.
winter diggings good, but is always more fun with a partner to be miserable with.
now that scott has ocean front property,we have an option of what we want to do for the summer.we'll be down at the picnic bench sipping brews with our lines in the water,or detecting the shoreline.the river is a very historic one.;)
