Definitely modern trash like aluminum screw caps, pieces of cans, curled up pieces of woven wire fences, etc….stuff that sizes like a possible coin but aren’t coins. If given the choice I would hunt iron 100% of the time, which is why I seek these areas out on purpose. That’s ME though…What is the most problematic, waste of time trash target you dig. Your question is which one, iron or aluminum ? Iron, because it’s always deeper than aluminum. But close behind that is a zincoln - dam things are crap and ring up as a gold ring too many times. What is the most problematic, waste of time trash target you dig. Is it iron or aluminum?
My number 1 trash item is Canslaw. I find that sites loaded with slaw often give up up a Gold Ring. (EVENTUALLY) I never dig nails. I have inbuilt discrimination in my brain for NAILS.What is the most problematic, waste of time trash target you dig. Is it iron or aluminun?

Yup, I knew a guy who would find a deep coin and put his trash in the hole to slow you down.Aluminum no doubt...I hate digging down close to 2 ft. only to find it's a dang aluminum can some idiot relic hunter had buried years prior so he could get his jollies from the next digger.
Beware of penny planters too. I remember one field where dozens of neatly planted penny's were in abundance!.Yup, I knew a guy who would find a deep coin and put his trash in the hole to slow you down.
Masking iron is where we shine......It teaches you how to isolate coins within the iron.... Aluminum is just too hard to disc out without losing good targets.Depends on what you're looking for. If jewelry is your target then it's al. In most cases you can disc out most iron or many times have a clue it's iron. The biggest problem with iron is masking.
Elmo, I get fooled on deep bent nails all of the time.Masking iron is where we shine......It teaches you how to isolate coins within the iron.... Aluminum is just too hard to disc out without losing good targets.
Deep , bent nails will bounce id's.....so the trick is to just barely disc the bent nail.... now a coin next to the nail should be detected if the coil passes the coin first and not the nail. When the coil hits the nail before a coin it is discriminated out. Pic 1 shows a coil swing to the left and the coin is discriminated. Pic 2 shows a coil swing to the right and the coin should be detected. This is why angles are so important. A left handed man may start off swinging left to right and miss a coin that a right handed man will hit with a right to left swing (SHOWN IN THE PIC'S BELOW).Elmo, I get fooled on deep bent nails all of the time.

On an etrac with my magic program, a bent nail should hit outside your detectors search pattern, providing a good hit in search mode and a bad hit in quick mask.
Without it you would dig a bent nail thinking it was a coin.
Below is a coin that is masked or missed with a coil swing to the left.
