A question concerning Gray Ghost NDT headphones

Confetrit

Well-known member
I am a relic hunter and I have used the Gray Ghost Original headphones for over 10 years now. I may need to replace them because the volume on one side has seemed to be out. I have really liked the Gray Ghost phones and would like to stay with them. I have some hearing loss and I have been looking at the GG NDT. I know this model has the dual volume control on either ear cup. My questions are do the control knobs have the click in place knobs, and how stable is the detachable cord? I was wondering if anyone here happens to use these, and if so what your thoughts are on the NDT. Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks in Advance, Kevin

I'm not sure but I think the Gray Ghosts are made by a different Company now & do not use the same speaker elements as originally. I do know the Killer Bs still use the high ohm elements and have the click volume control. I think Sun Rays are the same way.

I would have to dig around, but I believe I have a pair of the Gray Ghost NDT's stashed some where. I have used Gray Ghost for years as well as Black Widow and Gray Ghost made them, too. It took me longer then many, but I did go wireless a few years ago, myself. But to finally answer your questions, Confetrit, I can't remember about the knobs, but never had a problem with the detachable cord. Gray Ghost does (did anyway) do repairs, so you may want to look into that. HH Jim Tn

My NDTs have click in place knobs. Mine came with an extra cable too. I am still using the first cable. I unplug the cable every use so it fits in a container and have had no problems at all. It clicks in place and you can't pull it out unless you push the release button. I have had to send in two sets of Sunrays for open circuits near the ¼" plug. The last time it was not longer under the "lifetime" warranty and the cost for shipping to and from and the price for the cable was ridiculous The first time under warranty it still cost shipping plus some kind of fee. If I remember right it was about $20 overall. The price went up between the two returns for service. If they break again, I will solder in a new plug. If I ever have a problem with the GGs, I will use the new cable and maybe order another one depending on how long the present one lasts. I don't know how the sound compares between the old and new GGs. Compared to the sunrays, the GGs are more bass sounding whereas the sunrays are way more treble.

Thanks Jim tn, for the information. I was concerned as much about the detachable cord as anything else.

Thanks Picketwire for your response.

Dang, you guys are good. I love to see people help others. Gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. After 50 years of detecting, this is the best hobby esp. when a person needs help. Heck, I need help a lot too.

I too have a bad hearing problem and many of the headphone just wouldnt be loud enough for me. On most of the headphone I used with my hearing so bad the Timberwolf, the Troy Pros, the SunRay pros worked very good for me. I have 2 sets of the UniProbe made by Gray Ghost, but they have good volume, but both have a problem with the cable on the probe unit. I know They need to go in, but hear the original Gray Ghost changed hands and dont know if they will work on them, My set is over 10 years old while the others were not 6 month old and had a problem. Now speaking of Gray Ghost they used to make a set for a dealer made for people that are hard of hearing and was able to get a set, but wonder if these are being made as they are called Bushmasters and they were good volume for us that are hard of hearing.
One of the Problem with the NDT I had was the cable would go bad as I know one guy around here used to order from me 3 extra cables at least twice a year as most seem the cable where it plugs into the headphone seems the wires would beak in the plug. He may have been tough on them, but the nice thing was with the extra cables he carried with him so he could change them when needed.
The set that were well thought out was the Troy Pros as they worked on stereo or mono detectors so you didnt have a switch to flip to change, the cord stayed coiled and was long as I think it was over 10 feet, but didnt look long using it as the cable was coiled so nice and neat. I have 2 sets myself, my wife has a set and I do to that I use on my competition hunts I use as the coiled cable don't get in the way.
