A new twist on the parks and detecting issues.........

I quit smoking back in 86. A Friend died from lung cancer attributed to smoking. I would wake up of a morning and cough wheeze while I was lighting one of those damned things. I decided that living and breathing was far superior to smoking. Until I quit I was not aware how rancid the smell of cigarette smoke truly was.

I plan on living to be 100 Unfortunately that is less than 25 years away. So there is no room in my life for a known killer that I do not need.

Sorry to hear about that! It's just another way to control your behavior and transfer $$$ from your pocket into theirs. Wait till October when the U.S. government turns over control of the internet to the U.N. if you think it is bad now. Won't be able to make these comments soon!

It is the same way in local parks here. I'm a non smoker but I can tell you the reason why it got banned here...because people that did smoke couldn't be responsible and pick up after themselves. There were cigeratte butts all over the sidewalks, in the parking lots, and in the play ground areas...just products of laziness. That was one of the reasons but the big one was, people were throwing the butts into the mulch around the playground and trees, and it caught fire and had to be put out by the fire dept. Then later on, it happened again except it was in one of the wooded areas on the walking trails through the park. That one ended with approx 20 acres of woods and grass going up in flames, and threatened to get to some private property and a home before they got it put out. After that, they stopped all smoking in the city parks. All it takes is one or two to ruin it for the rest. I know a lot of smokers but I don't know any of them that don't throw their butts down on the ground. The place I work has smoke shacks outside the building for the smokers to go to...and they are the only ones that go out there. They have sand pits for them to throw their butts into but they can't seem to get the point that if they don't stop throwing them down on the grass or sidewalks, that they are going to ban smoking on the entire premises. They have already threatened to do that if they didn't stop.

How similar to those who dig holes!! A city official to whom I showed how I just prodded the ground with my thin screwdriver said he didn't even want the ground PENETRATED because of what others in the past did!

Yep, was at this park I've hunted for about 5 years now and this guy was kinda watching me from a distance didn't know it but he was the guy who lived on the property, he manages it I guess. He told me that he didn't want me hunting it because people had been using full sized shovels to dig while detecting, guess what I went back and hunted it and this guy was having a melt down police officer I know that always talks to me when I'm detecting told him that I wasn't causing any trouble and that he was sure I wasn't tearing up the grass. Never had a issue since. Had one guy show up with a ace 250 and a full sized shovel to another park I told him that he needed to get a smaller digging tool that he would damage the grass. And I don't think he ever did cause I never saw him again which eh I guess I drove away a detectorist b joining the hobby but if your going to do it wrong like that it was probably for the better. As that will get detecting banned.

Next they will try telling me I can't smoke on my Patio.Enough is enough...

I know you non, and former smokers are passionate about no smoking. But just maybe we smokers are as passionate.....
Have you thought we should have a choice too ????????????????
If I do not liter butts, and am responsible in disposal ( I am ) ..what harm can open air smoking cause?????

Big brother wants to run our lives . take away our choices .and many people who are do good-ers think they are the only ones right.. So they jump on the band wagon..........

I hate soccer. So maybe I should start a drive to ban it in our parks... because it's hurting the grass ( Turns it brown) , marking out the areas with the substance they use.. it's always blowing around so it must not be good for everyone to breathe in the open air...

Elton -

When we go out in public, others are impacted by what we do. Our parks, public buildings and transportation are gathering places for everybody. Your Second Hand smoke has been categorized with my golf, rockets, skateboards, archery, guns and all the rest of it; DANGEROUS TO OTHERS. That is why many municipalities have laws banning these activities in public parks, public buildings and transportation.

As for soccer, i think they have designated areas to play, just like they have designated areas for baseball, volleyball, golf, target shooting, archery and on and on. What they're saying is that if you want to do that stuff, do it here.

As a side note, we'd like to have you around for a good long time. Kick that habit.

Well put Rick..I would be happy if they gave a designated area I could smoke " If I want too"..... It's silly all this invasion of our private choices....

I fully understand I will never get through to non smokers and former smokers about my " feelings".that is a given..All I am saying is, I and others should have the privilege of deciding for ourselves.

I have never said a word that I recall about no smoking in public buildings, Bars, Schools etc..I get it...it affects others. This open air area bans has riled me up.. It affects no one but me in the open air..

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been moved by the Moderator to the "Views" or "General Interests" Forums, since it has nothing to do with "Metal Detecting". Oh that's right, you ARE the Moderator.

Sorry Elton, I couldn't help it. :)

should try smoking in Australia a 20 a day smoker is now spending around 7000 $ a year on cigarettes and that's increasing 12.5% every quarter . and no I didn't add a zero its seven thousand dollars a year and climbing.

I don't care I quit and don't care if people want to smoke more pollution comes out of their car just driving out of the parks car park.

so smoke away I say

I have a feeling , the smoking ban isn't going to be the only new bull$hit law we're going to be seeing . Little by little you are seeing more and more of your freedoms wiped out .

Do like me.I moved to Colombia,South America.Know one cares what you do.Ken.

Ya,rules are great until they go against our grain.. just gotta deal with them as best as possible... rest assured whom ever passed this rule no longer has to drink as they are drunk on their own power. ... funny how earlier in the post i believe you said it was your right to smoke in the park and later called it a privilege. .. you know if you fight this and win you will be that guy they watch like a hawk... might want to pickup some chew tobacco prior to next visit to hold you over till you can light up... i just came from a park today that instead of posting a list of rules they have signs posted at each area which only allow activities specific to that area allowed such as: only baseball allowed on baseball field, only volleyball allowed on volleyball court ect,ect,ect....so they end up with a big beautiful park with nobody in it,but there always seems to be park maintenance there whenever it's open, even on Sundays. .. if it aint to my liking i just move on .. good luck elton...

So far I have not been bothered while smoking in the open air park...….in fact one police officer who was out on foot patrol...was smoking LOL

Elton: Your smoking bothers me, and a few others on this forum. So kindly cut it out. Also .... it sort of bothers us that you metal detect too. So kindly cut that out as well. Ok ? :sadwalk:
