A little heads up

Took my GB DP to the beach this past weekend. It did very well in the dry and wet sand. However, when I allowed the coil to get wet, everything went south. All I can figure is that water got in the coil somehow and rendered the detector inoperable. Started getting a fuzzy clicking sound and nothing else. Would not ground balance or anything.
The good news is that after it dried out, it's back to normal operation.
Have not contacted Fisher yet, but I am sure they will take care of the matter.
Luckily I had a back up with me.
I will let you know what I find out when I call them tomorrow.

MMM mine is water proof. But mind you have not used it long in water.I think I will take a good look at my coil and see what could cause it to leak?

Man I hope we don't have a waterproofing problem with some of those stock coils.---Haven't had mine in the water yet.

Spoke with Fisher tech support today.
They want me to ship coil and control head to them for repairs.
Said once received, it would be a 3 day turn around.

Just for clarification, I posted this here as an FYI. Not intended to cast aspersions on Fisher products.
This is my first Fisher product, and I have been eye balling the F75 as a companion for the Gold Bug.
As a comparison, I called for tech support on my other brand detector about 6 months ago. Still waiting.........

I feel very confident that Fisher will make this right.

mine did the same thing!!! once water gets in it will degrade your coils depth and overall performance!! you need to send it in and get a new one! i have to send mine back soon as well. looks like a manufacturing/product run problem? better check yours(all g2,gb owners)before the warranty is up.

How long is the warranty on the stock coil on the G2/GB?---Does the stock coil carry the same 5 yr. warranty as the detector does? (when the whole unit is purchased new)------I know when you purchase auxilliary FT coils, the warranty isn't all that long.

Interesting topic. I have'nt heard of any problems from the prospecting guys and gals and you know they stick their coils in the water around and under rocks checking out streams and small rivers. Maybe and hopefully just a small batch. Still a problem for the people that has one that leaks. My 5 inch don't leak but I have not had the 11 inch under water.

I haven't tried my GBP at the beach yet and I don't know if it will work in salt water but with a CZ, when you enter salt water you have to ground balance again to compensate for the salt. You can't go from sand to salt water without re-ground balancing. If you get the coil wet, salt water will get into the coil cover and cause it to require re-ground balancing. That's all it is.

If you're hunting the beach, you just want to avoid getting salt water on the coil because it will change the ground balance requirements. You can either try to re-ground balance or remove the cover and dry it off.

The coils are supposed to be completely water proof so don't worry about getting them wet.

The GPP specs say that the ground balance is salt water inclusive so it should be able to balance out the salt when submerged. With water inside the coil cover this may make ground balancing out of the water difficult or impossible. You may want to try hunting the beach without the coil cover and just avoid hitting rocks. That should solve the problem.

Thanks Badger, but you could not be more wrong on this topic.

as far as i know coil is warrantied for the same legth of time as the coil!

Thats as clear as mud..heheheheeh I know what you mean though,,,,,,

This makes me want to really examine my coil close. Last week when I had the problem in the wet grass,it acted about the same way.I want to try it again when it;s damp to see if I can get the same response.About a week before I hunted in a light rain and had no problem at all. The time I did have trouble I wonder about because I was hunting with a guy using an Etrac, and I had a cell phone with me. Which after reading some of the older post I found was a no-no. At least it sounds like fisher is stepping up if there is a problem. And it is the 11dd.

:surprised:oops!!!! glad you could decipher my screwup!!!!.......... control box and coil warrantied the same.

Boxed up the coil and control head to ship out tomorrow morning to Fisher.
Tested it one more time before dis assembly, and it was still falsing real bad.
Ground balance would jump around from low 20s to high 80s as coil was pumped up and down.
It would see items in my test garden, but ID number was inconsistent with what I know them to be.

Fisher will find the problem Tony.-----I know you talked to them already but be sure and put a note in the box also describing the problem & how the detector is acting.---Probably be a good thing to call them after they receive the coil & head and talk to a technician at that time also, sometimes that helps them to narrow down the problem as they have the unit right there before them (hopefully).------Let us all know how it turns out.------------Del

Okay, well now I'm going to wait till you report back before I go dipping my 5" coil in the water and I just ordered the 11" coil. I hope it's a good one. And I hope yours gets fixed. I definitely want to know how it goes with that. I've never thought twice about getting a coil wet. It doesn't take rocket science to make a coil waterproof. It just takes a little quality control.

I sympathize with all who are affected by this leaky coil problem. Being a bit paranoid, I slipped a thick long transparent plastic bag over the coil when at wet areas, and secured it with a zip tie. So far, so good.

Guys -- Fisher will take care of this, I'm almost sure. Don't worry about getting your coil wet. They sell these as waterproof coils, and they know what they have, in the Gold Bug Pro, I'm sure -- in terms of it being a great unit. No way, IMO, will they just say "sorry, your problem." They will make it right. I will use my coil in the water, without fear. Even if you buy it as an accessory coil and thus only 1-year warranty, I can't imagine someone having this problem in month 14, and Fisher saying "sorry -- not our problem." They'll take care of them, I feel confident -- assuming it IS a batch of flawed 11" coils...

Steve
