Father's day was a dream come true for me. My baby...well 24 year old baby now...me...and my dad... got to do a little huntin' together.
It was the first time the three of us have hunted together in over 13 years.

My daughter hunted with me until about 1997...but then basketball took over.
In fact...remember the good old days when silver and wheaties were somewhat plentiful at 4" to 5"????... as you can see from Chrissy's coins which she still has to this day in the holders she put them in 13 years ago.

I got divorced in 1986 and at the time my daughter was 1 1/2 years old. I got custody and raised her on my own...which is something I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.
From the time she could walk...I took her to the ymca with me while I lifted weights. She would set and color or draw until I got done...then we played basketball together.
She really enjoyed it...so I practiced with her 7 days a week.
It paid off for her in 1999 when she won the national 3 point shooting contest for 7th grade girls.

It paid off a little further AND was easier on my wallet when she got a college scholarship to play basketball in the Rockford area.
Anyway...we figured since Dad's health is getting so bad...that we would all hunt together again in case he gets to where he simply can't do it anymore.
He didn't last long because his elbow has really been bothering him.... but it was a precious time which I will cherish forever.
We got a big rain beforehand but it didn't stop us at all...and it was beautiful and sunny when it was done.

We hunted a spot where they were tearing up some old sidewalk and it was very muddy.
It was also very hot...mid 90's...and very humid...so we hunted for only an hour or so. Dad actually only lasted about 30 minutes...but I would not have allowed him to hunt longer anyway...just too hot for someone in his condition.
My daughter and I found absolutely NOTHING under the sidewalk...BUT right along the edge where it came out I got a very sweet hit.
It was a very high "warble" from back inside the vertical edge of the old sidewalk dirt. I dug about 6" back into the edge of the mud with my hands...and pulled out a big clump of sidewalk "sand/mud muck". I started to rub the muck away until I saw the big rim...then carefully rubbed a little more to see the date of 1938...so I knew it was a Walker. It's been a loooong while since I have found one of these. I wanted to be very careful because as you can see...there's a little gritty crap and some sand mixed in the mud from where the concrete line was.
Well after rinsing...here ya go...BIG silver...1938D Walking Liberty half.

Sweet indeed...but ABSOLUTELY nothing in comparison to having 3 generations of us hunting together one more time.
The pic of me...my daughter...and my dad...with our detectors means more to me than a gazillion Walking Liberty Halves.
Thanks for sharing this with me.
