A cop saw me detecting in a county park today and told me

you can't do that in parks in this county. I said OK and I left. The temperature was only 38 degrees F. and there was not another person in the park, so it was easy for him to see me, I was near the baseball and soccer fields. I detected that park a dozen times when the weather was warm and I guess I was not so noticable among all the others.

Call the county and ask them. He may have woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

HH,

I knew that detecting was not allowed. I'll have to do it in the summer when I blend in with the crowd.

It seems that nowadays some folks are often resentful of seeing somebody out having a good time, when they themselves are not. Localities often carry a "collective" personality that can be good or bad. I was digging in a very small town last weekend, where the people are known to be very "peculiar'. I had permission from one of the most "peculiar" folks there, and you would not believe the looks I got from some of the other residents as they rode by at a snail's pace, looking almost angry that I was even there. I found a Zouave button, harmonica plate, and some trash. Was kinda glad to leave.......

What kind of an image does this attitude promote for our Hobby? Sounds to me like you may be the type to leave unsightly holes after your recovery as well.

all have seen. In my opinion, a screwdriver is not much neater either. My home made tool hooks stuff out of the soil, leaving only a slit in the grass. Pulls out pulltabs, rings, foil, coins, canslaw, etc. without the need to dig a plug. The targets that I can't seem to hook onto I leave there, step on the slit and move on to the next. About 15 months ago I posted a picture of this tool on these forums, hoping others would make one to use in public parks. One person made one and loved it. The others who responded all said they wouldn't use it because it could scratch a valuable coin. I pulled out a lot of clad down to about 7 inches and rarely did I see a visible mark. I search for gold jewelry and it's the only tool that I use. In damp soil it penetrates the ground easy and works great. Pulled a number of rings, some necklaces, pendants, and bracelets out of the ground, along with a lot of trash which also goes in my apron. Damaged only two very thin gold ear rings, but who cares when you don't have to dig all those plugs. The reason I made this type of tool is because I want to make sure I don't leave any visible marks anywhere. In my opinion, digging all those plugs for all those pulltabs put the sqeeze on our hobby. Other times in that park I have seen cop cars go by, maybe they didn't see me, maybe they did, I just kept searching.

Ha Jabo,

I want to see a photo of your tool.

I have been a surveyor for decades. I have found tens of thousands of buried property corners. Those corners should not be removed. There for in order for us to flag, locate and monument the corner a plug must be cut. This plug is either left open until the job is done or removed about three times to access it.

Point being I know about plugs.

Plugs done under the right conditions can be done in a very neat way and not kill grass or leave a sign of it being disturbed.

I am more or less a pro at doing this. I know when this can be done. It can only be done with the right amount of moisture and the right soil make up.

USUALLY CONDITIONS ARE NOT RIGHT TO MAKE A NEAT PLUG.

DON'T MAKE MESSY PLUGS where people will be observing the area and might care about the mess. It looks bad on us. I don't do it out of respect for the property AND OUR HOBBY. If I'm in the woods I just dig holes and cover them properly when I'm done. Non damage done even though it may be visible it's only temporary.

I think it's more important to preserve our hobby than to get the best finds.

Just stick straight down into soil, pull back toward you and up. Hooks onto target. Needs good pin pointing, Tesoros are excellent pinpointers. I use the long handled one, don't have to kneel, just bend over, lean my detector against my hip. All the jewelry shown was pulled out, and more not shown. Pulls out coins too. The pair of round ear rings at the far left got dented, very thin gold, all other items are not even scratched. Stuff comes out real easy. The chains come out real easy too. Old and deep tabs get quite weak and sometimes will bend or even break. One tool is made from an 8 inch bread knife, the other from a 1/8 x 1 inch flat bar purchased at Home Depot. Need a hacksaw and Dremel tool to cut the metal. The last hook will wear down from larger round stones that can't be hooked. Works great in wood chips, pulls out a wad of chips, they all cling together when pulling up. Great tool.

I don't dig plugs either, nor do I detect where it's not allowed.

Good to have in dangerous neighborhoods.

The Cop was right. The police officer has better things to do than to enforce a policy that you know you're breaking. It doesn't matter how you dig your trespassing.

Maybe the thing to do is to work with the Parks Dept. to get them to allow metal detecting. Metal detecting really provides more positive impacts to the parks than negative. I

if you know detecting is not allowed then why do it? do you really want a fine or possibly be thrown in jail over a hobby? doesn't matter how you retrieve your targets trespassing is trespassing and you should obey the rules of the property owners. just my 2 cents

I'll stay out of that park, that cop just might remember me.
