A BUNCH Of Waterproof Sovereign Threads! From Custom Builds To Just Throwing It In A Waterproof Box & Some Nice Custom Mods On Other Machines For Idea

The air was too cold this morning at sunrise so I used my land shaft and just hunted the dry sand. It warmed up good though after a few hours and wished I would have brought the water rig to try. Tomorrow morning if it isn't too cold I'm going to try it out. Got to see how warm it gets on the weather channel say an hour or two after sunrise because if it's warming up fast then I'll just take the water rig and hunt the dry sand until the air warms up enough to get into the water. Will report back when I have tried it in the water.

Finally water hunted with the rig today. Unfortunately there were very strong waves that would beat you up pretty bad if you went much more past between your knees and waist, so I only when that deep. The good news is it performed flawlessly. No issues with balance or fatigue at all. I'm thinking the sweet spot for the control box is right where I have it at head level in normal hunting position, which is the 23" extension for me that I am using for it.

Couldn't be happier with the setup! If I set the coil on the ground the coil does not try to lift. However, with the strong waves when one would hit it would try to lift the coil off the ground, so just for added safety when picking through the basket for the target (using my right hand taken off the grip) I just put my big toe on the edge of the coil to make sure a big wave didn't lift it up in the air.

Not an issue at all in terms of a hassle or anything for fast hunting. Felt perfectly natural to do. I use my left hand to hold my scoop and my left foot to push it into the sand, which is my normal routine so I didn't have to change anything other than putting the front of my foot on the coil just so I knew a wave wouldn't make the shaft lift up (thus dropping the box end some if it did).

So now I just need to do a hunt on a flatter day where I can wade almost to the top of my shoulders to see if there are any issues hunting that deep, but I don't see how anything could be a problem far as I can tell. That deep you'd just have to make sure you don't lift the coil real high which might box the control box into the water a little or something, but I never lift the coil anyway when hunting so what could go wrong? Even if it did take a dip with the zip lock bag zipped closed acting as the first line of waterproof protection, and then with the two velcro loops snugging the bag around the headphone/coil cable a bit further up more towards the back of the control box, I think chances are no water will get in.

I need to put some foam though between the pole and the bag, so no worries of the pole rubbing a hole in it, and as said some foam padding around the control box inside the bag so when taped tight I can still squeeze the box in and out of the bag going back and fourth to my land rig without needing to replace the bag. I'm happy how it is turning out.

Once I wade almost shoulder deep and see there are no issues, then I'll be picking up that $20 Plano waterproof box to mount on the shaft instead of the bag. Then I can even go neck deep with the box somewhat submerging into the water and not have to worry about it leaking on me.

I think this is a great way for Sovereign owners to water hunt deeper than you can chest mounted and pretty much eliminate the need for buying an Excal. In fact, I've read of guys who have compared their Elite or GT to their Excal and found the Sovereign was a bit deeper and a bit more sensitive to smaller items, so in a way you are getting a Excalibur with a slight edge if both machines are using the same coil. Not knocking the Excal of course, because we all know it's king of the hill in a water machine to most people. Just saying you won't be giving anything up by using your Sovereign in the water if you do it right with a rear shaft extension and a bag, or of course mounting a Plano box on that extension to go that last bit of depth neck deep.

PS- Two of my Excal friends were with me today and I had them both try on the Sovereign for size so they could see how it balanced and felt. Both swung it a tiny bit on land and remarked that it was well balanced and said something about the coil seeming to just "float effortlessly" while swinging it. They are both using the stock Excal S-shaft setup, which we all know is not the best balanced or most user friendly setup in the world.

When I get some flatter water this week so I can wade deeper I'll have another report on the setup.

Sounds like it'll work out well. Just don't lose your balance while scooping. Any time I start losing my balance I look like a stick in a blender.

I always put my coil to my right out a bit and solid on the group so it can act as a balance should I lose my balance and start tipping that way, and the sand scoop is my safety precaution for my left side if I needed to quickly stick it on the ground that way to catch myself. I'm only hunting in flat sand so the risk of falling is pretty slim unless I've still got a hangover or something. Just the same, if I did take a spill I doubt water would get to the box inside the bag so long as I didn't take my good old time getting back up. But the Plano box will for sure make there be no worries at all as to getting the box wet when I get around to getting that to replace the bag. I just want to make sure that the rig works fine at just about shoulder deep before going further here, but I can't imagine what could possibly show up as a problem now with the first test run almost as deep as my waist in the strong waves yesterday.

Main reason why I want the Plano box on an extension is so issues with drag or it trying to float on me, and also the added insurance it won't leak since it's out of the water even if I was to go neck deep. At the 23" height of the extension if I were neck deep the lower end of the plano box would just hardly be kissing the water.

If this works out with no issues then that's probably going to kill my immediate plans to buy an AT Pro as my deeper water unit when not using the GT on water hunts. Well, once I find my next big enough pile of gold to scrap I'll probably still get one as a backup water unit to my GT, I just won't be in as big of a hurry to do it. I still want one as a second water machine just so I can have fine gold chain sensitivity where as the Minelabs are not good at all for that. The Minelabs will bag super deep on the thinnest of gold rings, but with tiny gold earrings or thin gold chains they struggle. Not an issue really since most gold is lost in the form of rings, but I'd like to break out the AT Pro on days I'm after some finer gold chains and such water hunting.

If it pans out that I don't buy an AT Pro right away then I'll just be using the money to buy Explorer #4 sooner, a used SE Pro to add to my line up with a 12x10 on it. It won't replace my GT, but on those odd days I want to stare at a computer screen and be mesmerized by it (I miss that on my Explorers on the odd day here or there) I'll be breaking out the Explorer SE to swing on that day. Most days I like the simple dial and switch controls and smooth like butter stability of my GT, but have to admit there are a few days here and there when I'm in the mood to tweak and stare. I'm hoping the 12x10 does for my next Explorer what it did for enhancing my GT's already excellent stability, depth, and separation that it had using the stock coil. It already had all those things, but the 12x10 sets the bar even higher in those respects. From what I'm hearing it does the same for the Explorer too.

Took the water rig out again yesterday. It's working flawlessly so far, although I still haven't waded real deep yet with it so see how deep I feel comfortable going with it.

Planning another hunt today and may go deep as I can to see how the back extension thing does for that. No problems thus far with balance or fatigue with this setup, but I am sticking my big toe on the coil while taking my hand off the grip to pluck targets out of the scoop. Probably don't need to do that unless there are waves, but just the same it's becomming a habit for me now.

One thing for sure is I feel less burdened by not having the control box chest mounted. Gives me more of a feeling of freedom no being tethered to the shaft with a coil cable.

Headed off to do a mid day water hunt with a friend who has an Excal. The back extension I'm using at 23" long at roughly head height in normal hunting postion doesn't give me much confidence to go much past my belly button. Too much paying attention that I'm not lifting the coil and dipping the control box too low. I could probably go niple deep but just don't feel comfortable doing that, so until I get a $20 Plano box to throw the control box in quickly for water hunts, I ain't going deeper. I feel no more confident going any deeper than I did with the GT chest mounted high near my upper left chest out of the way, even though on the extension it's at head height.

I still will use the extension though when I get that Plano box, just so the Plano isn't trying to float or drag in water, and also so that even at top of the shoulder depth it's still out of the water a bit, giving me extra confidence no leak should matter should one be present in the box.

I will say though that mounting the box in a sealed plastic bag on this extension does make me feel more "free" not having the box chest mounted, but at the same time I felt no more confident to wade deeper than I do with the box high upper left chest mounted in the Minelab bag.

For sure if I was to go deeper it's very important to keep your front of your foot on the coil when using your right hand to leave the grip and pick the target out of the basket, because at say near shoulder height depth any slight lifting of the coil when you take your hand off the grip could get the control box dangerously close to the water.

Even though I have it seemingly sealed water right in the bag, I just don't feel that extra ounce of "freedom" by it being sealed in that and mounted at head height while in normal hunting position. At least with it high chest mounted I could look down and see how much water clearance I had to the bottom of the chest mount, but with it on the back extension, even though I know I had at least two foot or more of clearance at belly button deep, without looking back to see that I wasn't getting any extra confidence.

Now, on the other hand, at around belly button deep I had no worries, just like I do with it chest mounted, but just the same if I were to go deeper than I knew I could with it chest mounted, I'd probably find myself constantly looking back to see what the deal is. So in other words, it works great confidence wise to belly button deep with no worries, but any deeper and I know I wouldn't feel any more confident even though the box is a good foot or so at least higher than chest mounted. Without it in your vision as you look down to confirm, at least for me I know my mind would be always having that doubt and making me to want to look back. Plano box here I come!

And the best part is, that at say top of the shoulder deep using the Plano box on an extension, it will still be out of the water not causing drag or floating issues, and since even top of the shoulder deep it will still be a tad out of the water, no worries of a potential leak with the box should it dip here and there. I feel that's the best route to take if you want to go upper chest or top of the shoulder deep, and IMO I wouldn't risk going much deeper than belly button deep without the Plano box, if anything just for the shear peace of mind it will bring.

Another one of Kbron2000's excellent videos about his waterproof setup and wireless headphones using the Plano box. He shows how the clam cable connector is removed/installed and how the wireless headphones work for him. Great video can be found here in a thread with more content from him in posts...

Yet another thread on waterproof Plano box for the Sovereign to be thrown into on water hunts. This Plano box looks to be a bit more different than Kabron's? Not as long. Not sure yet which I'll use...

Another few threads with excellent pics and other info on waterproofing the Sovereign. Think the pics of the Plano box is the one I'm going to use. Seems less long than Kbron2000's? Just big enough to get the job done without being too bulky...

Is this one is this thread below a somewhat bigger box than the one in the above link? Not sure but it looks bigger. Either way, the model # in the thread above is the one I'm going for.

Somebody just told me that Dicks Sporting Goods carries Plano boxes in their stores. Not sure if they have the size I want, but if not I guess these boxes go for around $20 to $27 via mail order. I'll head to Dick's first though, as well as a few other sporting goods stores or perhaps a boat supply store. I hate ordering stuff through the mail and the wait involved when I get the itch to buy something, even if I have to pay a few more bucks to get it local.
