A Better Way To Super Tune The ProPointer

High,
I wear a big silver ring on my right hand. 24/7/365.
And I super tune the ProPointer by how far foreward I slide the ring finger when I grip the pointer.
That is real simple and free.
The idea with the tip saver is good. I

One may easily detune the Propointer by:
  1. turning it off
  2. placing the tip on the dirt in the hole
  3. turning the Propointer back on with the tip on the dirt
This detunes it perfectly to hone in on a sometimes elusive target.

Donny, It comes with the Sidekick for free.

It is a protective cover for hose nipple on automotive parts. It is extremely durable but has a pull nipple on the end that has to be cut off leaving a small hole in the center.
It can be filled with silicone sealant before or after the nipple is cut to seal it from dirt. Either way (with or without sealant) it works fine but I like it better sealed.
If you can't find any for free, contact me by PM.

Here's a video of my Sidekick prototype showing the ease of use.

Its not such a great video but it gets the idea across.

While we re on the topic of tuning, do older tip worn, propointers loose their strength?. I have several and having not used protectors they are worn down quite a bit at the tip. Even with fresh batteries they seem less powerful. Could one of these devices or the original method suggested by Ivanll help compensate for this? CO

As long as the coil is not exposed, your Propointer should get better depth because the coil is closer to the target but only by a fraction of an inch. There are two things you can do for your tip. You can build up the ABS shell by using a mixture of MEK and ABS plastic pieces dissolved into it to make a thick plastic paste. That can be applied to the tip and will dry into a hard plastic equal to the Propointer body. Another way is bedliner or plastic dip which wont be as hard but will protect the tip from further wear. Another way is a tip protector of some sort that can either stay on by friction (like the one I send with the Sidekick) or something glued on. Either way, you want to protect from coil damage. Once it is exposed, it will be all over for your PP. Its $50 for a new coil from Garrett.

Now after all that nonsense, Yes, supertuning will help gain an extra inch on a quarter in the air and deeper in the earth. But it has to be supertuned every time you turn it on to detect a target. With Ivan's method, that requires an adjustment because the metal cannot be left in the supertune location. That is why the metal strip is under a rubberband. If you forget to reset the metal strip, your PP will be detuned and won't have as much depth. That requires you to turn the PP off and reset the metal bar, turn the PP back on and find the supertune location. With the Sidekick it only requires the press of a button, no adjustment is necessary. Once it has been installed there is no more concern for adjustment every time you use it.

I shall try Not to upset anybody by pointing out that the "sidekick" was not available (anywhere) in 2008 when i got my Pro-Pointer, if it had been I would have been one of the first to get one.
Today June 2012 it's still not easily obtainable in our region, again if it was i would get one, if for no other reason but to keep up with the latest and at least get first hand experience with a product before making comments on it's suitability..............perhaps one day.

Seen and saved the video, it looks interesting.

Actually I do leave my Pro-Pointer on for a while when "Super Tuned" this is because I/we use it when Gold prospecting be it with a Metal Detector or when Gold panning and so slight adjustments are often required because the gold is so small and fine.
