6" Coil Epiphany

Lensman

New member
Finally figured out the 6" coil. Went out less than three hours in two parks yesterday, and nailed 77 coins, all clad. I was pulling out coins a the rate of one every two or three minutes! BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, I didn't dig ONE piece of trash! This coil is da bomb! It wasn't the mode or settings, it was simply how I swung the coil and how it SOUNDED. I got to the point where I knew it was a quarter, dime, nickel, or penny EVERY TIME. I'm really stoked. The more I use this amazing machine, the more I'm happy I purchased it.:hot:

I told everyone in a earlyer post, the 6" coil is a killer. I too tripled my coin finds. Also it has really good depth. Using the 11" or 17" will not produce as many coins in trashy areas due to picking up multi targets at the same time. In open beach or fields areas the bigger coils are a must.

I actualy find the small coil forces me to slow down and do a much better job of over lapping my swings which is important even with the larger coils. And it makes pinpointing a thing of joy

What sort of depth is the 6" coil capable of? I love the way it can zero in on a target, but worry that I'm missing some of the deep stuff that I'd be able to locate with the 11".

I'll let someone else speak to max depth, but keep in mind that the 6 inch is for extreme target separation, not max depth. I will say that the 5" on my E-Trac had NO PROBLEM hitting 6 - 7 inches on dimes, so I am confident the CTX can do that too, but I just haven't used my 6" coil enough yet.

I've been hitting coinage consistently at 4-6" ON SCREEN, but I've found that under digging that by two inches does the trick most of the time. If I do that, then it's almost always in the plug. Don't quite know how the dang thing works, only that it DOES!

Thanks, guys. Getting dimes at 6 or 7 inches sounds like perfectly acceptable depth to me. I was going to use my 11" coil tomorrow, but think I might switch to the 6". Hoping to detect the yard of an old house which will likely be riddled with trash.

Here is a link to my post on a hunt with the 6" coil. I have been getting 6-7 inches of depth on a dime with the 6" coil but the real plus is its ability to separate a coin from iron even when it is almost on top of it.

I just bought a 6" coil off the forums a few weeks ago. Wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard a lot of good things about it. I remember one guy saying that he liked his so much that it became his "go to" coil. I couldn't figure out how that was possible at the time after liking the standard 11" coil so much. BUT I have to say... I agree pretty much with most people are saying here. It is fun, it is deep, it's easy to swing, it does make you sort of slow down and overlap more....

I am impressed with the depth. I've hit targets in the 6-8" range with the 6" coil.

I thinking this is quickly becoming my "go to" coil too...

I've been waiting for the 5x10 Coiltek coil to come out before I purchase a smaller coil...but not sure I can wait that long, I have just the place I want to use a small coil for silver where I've hunted with my 11 and 17 and I know both those coils will null if iron is near a silver, at least in ground coin, was hoping the coiltek coil would get out and get some reviews but like I said, not sure I can wait, I have a friend that loves his 6 inch coil and says it gets good enough depth so I'm hungry for one!

I have missed coins that were laying close to ferrous coins with the 11 inch coil , I believe the masking effect is not eliminated with the ctx. Big coils will always be useless on iron contaminated sites.

I have missed coins with the 11 inch also but it was do to many signals under the coil at one time hard on the ears . The 6 is just easier to use in the trash. As for depth I can get 6 to 7 inch pretty easy I have found some coins as deep as 10 inches dimes . I think I have found about 7 or 8 at the 9 inch mark , I run hot at 30 for sence . sube

That's been my experience, in testing surface coins anyway so I hate to think of what I've missed. I hunt mostly in ground coin target separation because of our mineralized soil, have tried FC too, but GC works best. I've found plenty of coins with rusty nails near by and even in the holes, but I've also dug many more nails that sounded like silver, until I get them reeled in. I have as yet not been able to master the art of using ferrous coins .mode to "see" good coin targets in with iron, I'd sure like to know how that's done, have seen plenty of videos of it and Sube has some excellently helpful videos, I just haven't the gift, yet anyway, so hoping to snag a used 6 inch with low miles on it if there is such a beast in the wild. Mean time I'm looking around for the best prices on one. I don't know if I can hold out long enough for a used one but trying. They're probably scarce seated quarters in Oregon.

Mine must be bad... It seems useless, I always go back to the stock coil after 2 or 3 days of hunting with it to no avail. Don't know what I'm doing wrong?

The first couple of times I took it out, I was unimpressed. Then I hit a gorgeous 1883 Morgan alongside a creek with the 6, AFTER searching the same area with the 11. But the other day I just seem to have dialed in the swing. I just started swinging a little quicker and shorter, and BOOM! I was hitting clad everywhere. It's kinda hard to explain, but I'm sure others know what I mean. The 11 and 17 are really problematic in SF parks, due to the soil and trash. I'm going to a spot Ive been wanting to hit at Golden Gate Park tomorrow. Bringing both the 6 and 11, but I just have a feeling that the 11 won't be used. :)

Regardless of what some people claim about it being the only coil they use, it is NOT a coil to use exclusively. The 6" is best suited for those places that are so incredibly trashy that you walk away from them after trying it with the pro-coil. Even though it's not a lot, there is loss of depth with this coil and trying to cover ground with it is like trying to paint your house with tiny detail brush.

No tool is best for for every location and situation.

Thanks for posting your video Firefighter 43! I appreciate you including the TID numbers for your silver dimes too! So far, all the silver dimes I've found (14) have ID'd at 12:43, 12:45/46 & 13:45/46 and with yours coming in lower than that, makes me think I've been missing some very good finds! I've not used a 6 inch coil yet but assume it ID's coins the same numbers as the 11 inch would. I had started not digging 12:41/42's because whenever I have they have been bottle caps, I usually dug the first w or 3 in a hunt, but I can see from your finds that I have become complacent about digging those numbers, my mistake! I'll not be making it again! Great hunt! I've not yet found a barber coin, but hope to and you've increased my chances by posting your video so my thanks to you!

Because the 6" coil provides good target separation, I'm considering using it with Recovery Fast set to "off" and Recovery Deep set to "on". Anyone have opinions as to whether that would be a good idea or not? Thanks.

-Ken

Kittlitz I don't think that's a good idea with deep on the detector has to process more information than fast on slowing it down , what you want is a detector working as fast as it can to separate coins from junk without blending the signals together that's what fast does. Recovery deep processes more info to give better id than fast on . And as far as depth there is no deference .
