5900 di pro sl question

Just purchased one from the big auction site. Took it out in the yard to test on some targets and the threshold was loud with static and very inconsistent. I have read the instructions well and think I have a good understanding of how to operate the machine. It ground balanced easily. But the threshold would come and go. At times it went completely silent and the reset trigger had no effect. I have tested many machines in my yard and had no trouble with EMI with them. Is this machine just more sensitive to EMI?

Thanks,

Lee

Hombre is the one to answer this post as he knows how to tune the 5900 to the Gill's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is it needs to be tuned up by White's. It is not uncommon for older components to change value with age. The coil may also be showing its age as well.

Yes....... I do know how to tune a healthy one, this one sounds sick to me, time for Todd at White's to have a look at it.

I just never encountered a wonky Threshold before.

Yes when it come to analog Whites 4 Filter detectors Todd at Whites is the Man! He got my XL-PRO running silky smooth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I tested it with one of my coils that worked fine last time out. I'll try it again with a different coil just to be sure. If no improvement I guess it's off to Whites. Any idea of what a tune up may cost me? I'm only in it for $175.00 so I've got some room.

Thanks again,

Lee

Its hard to say as they will also test the coil as some times they have to replace if it fails the test with the newer style. The first XL-PRO I sent in needed a new coil and they calibrated the detector and I think it was 79.00 shipped back to my door. The second one was a little less but didn't need a new coil. I would be surprised if it wasn't under 100.00 shipped back to you. When you send it in all they need is the box and coil so you can save a little on shipping. Give them a call and they will tell you where to send. They have the best service in the industry, IMHO.

Thanks Harold. I tested in in the house a few minutes ago with a different coil and got the same results. I noticed that when the static happens the needle jumps. Makes me think it could be EMI. But that doesn't explain why at times I can turn the threshold knob all the way in both directions and get no change in threshold volume. Guess I'll be calling whites tomorrow.

If you live close to Sweet Home OR, you could drop it off there and probably get it fixed for free....in any case you should send it to Sweet Home, the best service is from the factory.

Update on detector. My local whites dealer, who is an electronics repairman, tried cleaning the pots. No luck, and suggested I send the unit to Sweet Home. Shipped it yesterday. And the seller agreed to pay half the cost of repairs since it was sold as a fully functional detector. Think I'm going to come out okay on the deal.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Lee

Man you made out like a fat rat eating cheese! Be sure to let us know when you get it back as curious to what was wrong with it.

Whites just called. My new to me machine is repaired. Said it had a bad coil and 3 bad pots. Repaired for $130.00 and change and they threw in a new battery holder. Gotta love whites service. Now just got to get $65.00 out of the seller.

That is a good price considering the 3 pod's along with the coil. One thing for sure Whites will having working like new!

Got the detector back from whites with a clean bill of health. Gave it a test run with the Bigfoot coil and picked up about $5.00 in clad in a couple of hours at the sports complex. Question for you old pros. Noticed that the meter doesn't lock on to a good target but moves slightly as I sweep over the target. Is this normal? And the seller came through with 70 bucks as promised. Am pleased.

You might want to check it out with a concentric coil, mine locks on pretty well when centered over the target. It could be your Bigfoot coil, don't know, never used one.

I tested it with both the stock and 6 inch and got the same results. Next time out I'll try some different settings. I was running preset on gain, trying to get a feel for it. It's not like the needle is all over the place, it just moves slightly. I thought I had seen youtube videos showing a solid lock on coins with no movement.

...How do you have the ground balance set? I set mine just at a very slight positive rise in the threshold as the coil gets closer to the ground. I have the Signal Balance set at about 3:30 to almost 4:00 O'clock on the dial, a very hot setting if done right, it absolutely signaled on an 8" gold class ring set this way. The class ring read as Pull Tab on the meter. Mine wavers on the needle movement, say it hits on the "i" on Dime on the first pass, the next pass it may land on the "D" in Dime. A lot has to do with coil presentation, do you do tight little wiggle over the target at about 3 to 4 inches wide? or do you make full wide coil passes over the target? That makes a lot of difference. What you saw on youtube that may have shown a picture of the meter after it passed the target, the meter stays locked until you pass the next target.

PS: I forgot to add, coins may not always lay flat and parallel to the coil, they could be canted at an angle therefore you could be getting different meter readings
I once dug up a barber dime that read as pull tab in one direction of sweep and nothing from the other direction, never could figure out that one, even checked in all-metal and nothing else in the hole. Must have been on edge, nothing is written in stone on this hobby except if it beeps then dig!

Thanks Hombre. I tried big sweeps, short and fast, short and slow, all the way around the target. I get what you are saying. I was just concerned that maybe my detector may have an issue if it wasn't locking on like others. That's not the case. Still love the detector. As for GB, tried it dead on and slightly positive.
