5 inch Excellerator on sovereign

I got quite a few high pitched mosquito type sounds on the beach, just not sure if they were the "right" ones. The meter would be nice just to confirm it's not falsing on iron (if it's positive dig it).

I saw this on Jim Vokes page:

Most new Soverign owners tend to make the Soverign more complicated than it is. It is actually a very simple machine to set up and go......

Set the control box up as follows:

Two discriminate knobs set a Zero!!!!
Volume knob set at max volume!!
Sensitivity knob set at 12 o'clock
Threshold knob until you can just hear it..

Isn't that easy? Do not change the settings to anything different.. Just set the knobs there and hunt that way.. Can't get any simpler..

With the settings this way, if you are hunting and the machine seems to be erratic or there is too much static ...... there usually only two reasons for this.. either the battery needs charging or there are power lines or a transformer in the immediate area.. Try adjusting the sensitivity knob lower, sometimes that helps!

When detecting, keep the coil flat to the ground and scrub the ground.... in other words keep the coil as close to the ground as possible.. As you are going along you will hear beeps, when you do, go over that spot again.. If the beep disappears, continue on.. If the beep repeats and is positive signal on the meter .. dig it.. Soon you will learn how and when to discriminate with the meter.. Emphasis on the 'when"

There that is enough for now.. don't make it too complicated because it is not!!!!

Good Luck to all of you new sov owners.. It is a great simple machine!

That's pretty much it.

When it comes to scrubbing, most take that as "rubbing". Don't like it myself......extra effort to move the coil, coil motion cannot be controlled and smooth, extra wear and tear on the coil and shaft.
I like to float it just off the ground.

Once you get the sound and motion down, it's very easy to use.

One of the ways to tell if it is a false off of iron is it wont repeat in the same spot. Once you get one of these signals you wonder on just take and wiggle the coil only over that area which in some cases is very small if deeper. If you can get it to repeat and you can get the tones climbing or a nice pitch to the tones I will go from a different angle and see if it is still in the same spot, if it move quite a bit it is probably false on iron. If it is still questionable and ever in doubt because it sounds too good to be trash I will dig it anyway.
I also recommend that anyone new to the Sovereign use auto sensitivity as it will run smoother and help with the learning curve. It really is a turn on and go detector and maybe tough to begin with for some while other have no problem, but will say the more you use it the easier it becomes and you will probably learn something new each time out with it. You want depth?? That come with experience with it and knowing the tones and what to listen for. 4-6 inches for a beginner with no problem, but as you get to know it 10-12 can be done and maybe even more.

Good luck
Rick
