5 inch Excellerator on sovereign

Eric

New member
used the excel 5'' today on my sov. XS2. I was impressed with the small coil. Sniffed out some buttons, 1 coin and a musketball. It is a bit senstive though, for bumping against roots of trees.

Its a keeper for sure.

I to was looking into the 5 inch Excellerator for my GT for the trashy parks i hunt in...... how is the depth ?

Don't expect a comparison. Everybody gets talked into the sunray.

In fact, as far as I can remember , I am the only person who has ever posted a comparison between Detech and Sunray coils of the same size (12.5").

I have thought about this myself.

If the 5" Detech is as hot in comparison to the larger Detech coils, then the Sunray is probably a better choice in very heavy trash. There is a reason for this statement.......too hot a coil will choke in trash even if it's small. Sunray coils have a narrow detection window which is good for picking through trash.

Each will have it's own merits.........and shortcomings.

Learn your detector well before fooling with too many coils too soon.

If I'm not mistake the 5" Excellerator is also a concentric coil.

I hear what your saying on learning the machine before going crazy with coils Art, although it may be too late :twodetecting: Mine came with the 10" BBS, 12.5" Sunray Intruder and the bohemith 15" WOT.

I've read a lot of great things about the original 8" Coinsearch coil, both being a good coil for beginners on the Sov to learn the tones, as well as having great depth (equal or better then the 10" BBS). I was able to land one on eBay for $50 delivered, and it arrived today. Tomorrow I'm going into San Francisco to hunt at GGP, which I'll try the Coinsearch at. I'll also try the Sov at the beach tomorrow, as that was one of the main reasons I went for it as my single frequency Fishers choke at the beach. I'll try it with the Sunray Intruder at the beach for a couple of hours to get a feel for how stable the machine is and such. Yesterday I was at a trashy park I hoped I might be able to pull a silver or two from, and the 10" BBS was too big for trash, it was going nuts. I suspect the 8" will do better, but for lots of thrash the 5" will probably be the best solution.

Brian

I found the depth very good for a small coil. I did not measure it but for a larger button I had to dig a bit. But Art, you are right. It is much better to learn the detector first, before buying other coils. I made that mistake in the past. I bougt a good brand detector with ALL optional coils and then came to the conclusion that I did not like the machine. waste of money really...

HH, Eric.

There is a lot of difference between coils.....more than just ground coverage or ability to handle trash and mineral.
They have differences in how hot they are and how wide the window of detection is. You end up with a difference in how fast or slow you need to work, and what difference there will be in the detectors response.
With just two different coils, you have to learn what each one sounds like, and how to work it.......it's like trying to learn two seperate detectors and managing to keep it all straight without confusing yourself.

Sure that the 5" Detech is a DD coil. They have a 8" concentric, but I think that is the only one.

Brian....watch that S-12.......they are prone to just giving a threshold only change on a very weak hit. Work each spot that causes a threshold only change to see if some target audio will work up or if it was just a false from a noise spike or some mineral.

thanks Art again.....

by the way Art, the detech 12.5" is a great coil. I have the WOT as well and its a great coil but I am selling the WOT.

Brain, good luck!

Eric.

I had a 14" Detech a few years ago. Super hot, but heavy as heck. Worthless around noise and trash. It fried after a couple years.
Had to have another, but not so big, so got the 12.5". Really love it.......hard, solid hitter, even in dry dirt. Still must stay away from excess trash and noise with it. Great in clean quiet areas, and not too heavy. You do have to learn how to run them......
Too much sensitivity will wipe out the depth, even if there is no falsing. Found 11 o'clock on the 2a and 12 o'clock on the GT to be optimum when conditions permit. That's in MY DIRT........not necessarily yours.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ART!!

Those years creep up on a person fast don't they? Wasn't that long ago I turned 40, but that is because of bad memory :heh:

Thanks for all the advice Art, I appreciate it, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO :detecting:.

I had a somewhat successful dry-run at the beach today, landing a 1908 Barber at 9" deep, and a few clad coins (including a couple of dimes one year shy of the silver years). This particular little beach area has a fair amount of iron (mostly old nails and big bolts), so lots of nulling. Lots of interesting sounds, including sounds akin to nats buzzing off. I assume these are just minerals in the ground, would you guys dig these sounds ? I'm sure I probably missed a lot of stuff as I mainly just dug coin sounds, which were few and far between. I'll be glad when I get my meter back from Sunray, hopefully it'll help me decipher the songs of the Sovereign (I feel like I'm missing my training wheels :bouncy:

.

Watch for high pitched mosquito sounds if it is soft and narrow. This is your silver sound on moderate to deep silver items. Once you hear it and know what it is, you won't look at the meter.....you will forget the meter is there !!!!

I hit that tone in a few places, but was caused by mineral and was very wide. In one place, it dissapeared after a couple sweeps. The first instant that I heard the "mosquito" I think my heartbeat tripled.......then there was the dissapointment that it was just a hot spot.

A real silver target sounds SOOOOOOO much nicer than a clad. Very clean and pure.

Now we are both just a couple of cranky old farts.
I put a lot of living into the years that have gone by. Hope you have done the same. When it's time to go, it is good to know that for better or worse, that we have LIVED.

I only hope and pray it will not be too hot for my Sovereign and the trip is not in the near future.:angel::shrug:
