3rd trip to the old house....

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I went back to the old house I have been having pretty good results at and although I did not find any silver coins today, I did
find a few interesting things.
The wheat pennies finally started showing today.. first ones I have found here.
I actually found one wheat penny in the hole with what I believe is what is left of 1943 steel penny... just slightly bigger and thicker than the wheat I found with it.
I believe this is the third time I have found one like this.
It is pictured in the center of the row of wheat pennies.
I also found two more rope tensioners ( found one last time).
The item above the quarters is a presidential token.. I think they came in Cracker Jack boxes many years ago.. I have found a couple of these over the years.
The item shaped like an owl I guess is some kind of pendant.
The item pictured by itself is a mystery to me... (any help with ID is much appreciated).
It appears to made of brass or bronze, and ID'd like a half dollar.
It is mostly hollow inside with only one hole.
Also pictured is all the trash I found today.... dug lots of iffy signals.
Thanks for looking!

I would think the steel penny would corrode. That being said I have dug two that came out looking no worse the wear than the coppers...... neat finds!!!

Actually, it is heavily corroded, but is almost the same size as a penny and since I found it with a wheat penny, I assume that is what it is.
All the wheat pennies I found yesterday were from the 1940’s... most were 1944.

Coin book indicates zinc coated steel is same size as regular penny at 19mm. Maybe a foreign coin or a small knock out plug???? Weird those I dug had no apparent damage.......

I think steel cents do rust/corrode away. I've never dug a reconizeable steel cent in 48 years of detecting. I have dug several cent size disc's heavily rust corroded that I figured might be a steel cent. Guessing fwcrawford, that's what you have. HH Jim tn

With goodies like these you probably haven't got all the goodies out of there.
That one weird object looks like the handle for some tool, just my guess.
SL52, are you going to plant silver for fwcrawford? 😁

I agree... this is the third time I believe this has happened.... finding one or more wheat pennies in the same hole with a penny sized rusty disc.

I have to retract my thought/statement on steel. If I remember correctly now the two steels were dug from an old barn floor (while looking for something else) which was still protected and most likely never had water/moisture exposure. I never really thought about that until now.

Nice hunt, believe the brass mystery item is a sword pommel.
Thanks.. another forum member suggested the same thing.
This piece is hollow inside, but solid on the outsided,, in other words not like a cap with an open end.
If this is in fact a pommel, I can't figure out how it mounted to the handle.
There is a small depression with a hole there that looks like it would be on the top or bottom if this was mounted to the handle.
It may be a pommel like you say, but I'm confused about how would mount from looking at it.
