2nd week with Explorer and...

Well, tomorrow marks my second week with the Explorer, and I've got to say that.....THE PINPOINTING SUCKS! Now I know why everyone pays an extra two hundred bucks for an X-1. The factory pinpoint is virtually useless. If there is one thing that i'd like to have back from my XLT, it would definitely be my pull-trigger, concentric, pinpointing. I am really trying to learn this thing, but am quickly getting frustrated with target recovery. I'll give it another shot this weekend, but I got a good feeling that there's about to be a good deal on an Explorer on E-Bay!
 
Chris, you have got to realize the Explorer has a double D coil design. Therefore, you have to pinpoint by finding the loudest pinpoint volume one way and mentally marking a line from the front to the rear through the center of the coil. Now turn 90 degrees to the target and do it again. Where the two lines cross X marks the spot. Just make sure you find the LOUDEST spot each way. Works great for me.
 
you can also try pinpointing in disc, just keep bringing the coil back towards you while sweeping till it disappears the target should be under the front ofthe coil.. it takes a little practice but its really not that hard...
 
I thank you guys for the pointers. I print off every pointer I get, and take them out into the field with me and try them. I like everything about the Explorer better than the XLT, except the target recovery. That's it. My only gripe. I even made a pretty cool program by using the learn mode. Damn, I just get frustrated with the pinpoint!
 
I just move the coil front to back and side to side and my target is always under the label on the coil.. No problem whatsoever.. Hang on you will learn to really like it... Frank..

I agree, the pinpointing isn't as nice as my Eagle Spectrum, but don't give up. It is do-able and won't be nearly the issue after a while. I had read so much on it before mine arrived that I had minimal problems, but I'm still learning.
One thing I like to do is pick the coil up in front of you a good two feet or so. Wait until only threshold is heard (no noise), then push pinpoint. Bring the coil down over the target and start pinpointing. Use the X technique. It works really well and I rarely have to enlarge my holes.
I have noticed if you move the coil really slowly in trashy areas you might seem to get a never ending tone going in one direction. Sometimes this is a second target fairly close to the first. Just move the coil a bit faster in pinpoint and you will usually notice the tone drops out briefly before picking up again. Now you can sort out the targets. Took me a while to realize why I sometimes had this constant tone in one direction.
When all else fails just use the detector in discr when pinpointing. The good, loud signal is usually when the target is under the main strip. Again, use the X method. It's a bit tougher in discr but it's rarely necessary.
Faint targets give that faded 'chopped' tone(s). Just pretend it's a constant tone and go for the loudest part.
Sorry this is so long but I've read everything I could find on this topic. Currently I find it only a bit more difficult than my Spectrum except in really trashy areas. Keep at it, in my newbie opinion the machine's worth the double-D coil woes with pinpointing.

I always make sure I have a threshold tone before pushing the pinpont button (btw make sure you release it - you don't hold it in like other machines). Do this by lifting it into the air a bit. I find that works better than just swinging off target. Also, if there is a larger target nearby it may readjust the pinpoint to that target and you will lose the smaller target. You need to restart pinpoint mode in that case.
 
If your patience with new highly advanced machines only last for a couple of tries during one week, then I will agree with you, and there will be a lucky chap on E-bay getting a good detector.But I know things can get frustated but cheer up, there are many expert on this forum who will give you there best advices (i'm not an expert).
Back to the pinpointing thing. Here is my suggestion wich really had helped me out.
Change the response to audio 2, for me that did it.You get a much smoother signal wich not brakes up, and the sound will increase when you are on the top of the target.
You can give it a shot if nothing else works for you.

I've been in the hobby since the 70's. At one time sold detectors... the only way to learn them is to spend the time.. the better they get (like the Explorer ) the more time it takes to learn them. There are lots of tips and help here, but you or anyone else has to spend the time.... Each time i upgrade and get the latest and greatest it goes deeper and does better, as long as i take the time to learn it. Yes, i have a Xcal and Soverign and will soon be getting the XS.... post back here in a month or two and let us know how you are doing..

Without a doubt the easiest way to pinpoint is to go from side to side then once you get a rough idea front to back. As you do this front to back movement you adjust a few inches at a time on either side to hit the target. One you think your close you do really tight 4 inch swings side to side and front and back to make sure. It only takes me about 2 seconds to pinpoint each target now. Chris, if you're reading this trashy parks are very very tough to pinpoint with the stock coil. Even with tons of experienced the top guys still probably have to guess alot. Sometimes pinpoint mode will be useless from too many targets and x scanning is your only choice.
 
Chris, i dont even use the pinpoint feature i had the same problem as you ,i have only had my xs since dec. and you cant hunt in wisc until the ground thaws out i use the 90 degree method and i can say i got it down preety good I WOULD NOT SELL MY EXP>XS i have a gti2500 and gti 1500 (garrett) and i find a hell of alot more with the minelab, my friend has an xlt that he loves but each time we go out in the field i outhunt him EVERY TIME and he has had the xlt for a couple of years i dont see myself buying a new detecto for quite a while
 
Chris; I had problems pinpointing with the 10.5" Minelab coil, went to the smaller X-8 coil from Sunray, which is an 8" coil. Made it a lot easier to pinpoint with. GARY
 
I use the Exp/Wot combo at county grassy parks using the methods in the above posts.
I would suggest you learn this machine at sandy beaches, a lot less frustration, and fun too!
It worked for me.

hey chris, no doult about it your having a tough time pin pointing. i know we all did in those first couple weeks. but once you get it down youll be fine and be able to nail them targets every time. just takes alittle practice. stan sjmdc
 
I thank everyone who responded to my post. I read every single reply, and printed off all of the tips that each of you gave me. I will keep trying. It just gets a little frustrating learning a new detector, expecially one this advanced. When I wrote that post, I had just come in from the local park, and had myself totally flustered! I have chilled out a little, and have accepted the fact that it will take me some time to learn.
