2011 might turn out OK! (My find of the year.)

2011 will probably be my worst ever year detecting. I'm not motivated lately to go out. The weather has been very uncooperative. My finds when I have gone out have been OK, kind of so-so. I woke up from a nap this afternoon with nothing much to do so I headed out around 3pm. It was chilly and very buggy. I was bitten hundreds of times even with bug spray liberally applied. Here's everything:

Normal clad. A small sterling ring. Not bad. About an hour into the hunt this turned up:

I reckon I've found close to 50 gold rings in the past 6 years. This is the best by far. 18K white gold. A big sapphire and diamonds. 8.5 grams. Somebody paid a heap of money for it, Id bet. Of course to be sure I tested it using my kit just like old Mufar would. It's 18K. I am super stoked about this ring. 2011 is looking better and better all of a sudden!

It rang up at VDI 72, T-Pro, 3 inches deep, in clay. If that isn't motivation to dig crusty old zincs, I don't know what is.

Chris

I had to stop at work to drop something off and, since I was covered with mud, the gang asked if I had found anything worth showing. I was very happy to pass around the ring. A co-worker (friend) tried it on and loved it. She asked if she could have it. I said it probably had 4-500 dollars worth of gold in it and, NO, she couldn't have it. She pouted and said she would give it to me if she had found it. I said no worries. I already have one! She won't be speaking to me next week, I think.

Good find there Chris! Good pay day too.

In all my years and hours under water dredging I have never found white gold. So I must assume it is a man made up thing. My guess, without reasearching the issue is that it might contain 5% gold? The rest Platinium? or other?

What do you think? Still, Its worth some cash-ola!

Heres a pic of just some of my nuggets this year dredging...

Sweet ring !! Congrats ! Thats the highest VDI reading I've seen so far for gold and the AT Pro. Was it a bouncy 72 or fairly solid??
I also found a hefty 14k ring the size of a class ring with a sapphire that rang up as a very solid 54.

Nice work , HH

Crusty old zinc(that ring) appears to b the result of a content hunt. some folks dont care for the VDI, but it's always interesting when U combine the audio and the numbers. U said 2011 will probly b your worst year ever detecting,, U might wake up from a nap and find U overslept. Its been a cruel summer for a lot of detectorist, wierd weather for sure. But this year aint over until next.

Wonderful ring ! 75% gold, doesn't matter what colour it is, except to some jewellers, who dont like working with white gold.

You're serious? 18K white gold is 75% gold. The rest something to make it white. I think it can be nickel, silver, or palladium. There is just under 400 bucks worth of pure gold in the ring. (I think 18K is the highest purity for white gold because above that it isn't white.)

Wow! Cool YELLOW gold. How big is the big one at around 10-11 o'clock in the photo? It looks like a beauty!

Chris

72-74. Right where a zinc cent with a chunk missing hits most of the time. When you're expecting a penny and get a gold ring you remember! I suppose VDI on gold rings depends on what the gold is alloyed with.

I just did an air test and its down around 67 but that is indoors with all my electronics running. The ground was that really stinky clay. Smelled like a swamp, or worse.

Fall is my favorite time to hunt. Except for the cold mornings. This morning it was 40 when I got up at 6am. I was going to go treasure hunting then but as I was watching the news and making a pot of coffee, I figured it was too cold. This afternoon felt very much like fall to me except for the bugs.

Chris

That one is a quarter ozer...!

Well Chris you are correct about the white gold. I guess the white alloy(s) really dissipates the gold color more than one would think.

Nickel, silver and palladium are probably the most common metals alloyed with gold to make it "white". It is the nickel that does the trick most of all. That being the case, white gold generally gives a lower reading on VDI's than the same amount of yellow or rose gold.

That's a FAB nugget. How long did it take for your hert to slow down on that one?

How much of a premiun over spot does a big one like that sell for? Double? (A big guess.)

Chris

First, we know you got banged up pretty good in the wreck this summer, then, you posted that you didn't really feel like wanting to go, add the bugs to the mixture,
BUT, you know your gear, and you got the skills...so you went anyway, and dug that "zinc" ...I am gonna dig 1000 more zincs thanks to this, and I bet by dam, one will be a honker like that!
Thanks Chris!

I had a different post in mind while I was driving home. Something long and windy. That said. I keep good MD records and in my second year I dug more dimes than pennies. That is impossible to do unless you're notching out zinc cents. I have been back to all those sites many times and collected some of the stuff I probably skipped back when I thought every silver ring hit on the dime or quarter notch.

Physically, I feel great lately. I was only able to detect for 2 hours yesterday but that was due to the bugs. Also reached a monetary settlement with the insurance company without a lawyer although I have not been paid a dime yet. Paid for truck repairs, medical expenses past and future, lost work. I'm satisfied. It will be a relief when it's over.

Thanks for the nice compliment by the way. That was kind of you. If you do find that clunker you're buying the first round. (I'll buy the next.)

Chris

PS I do feel like detecting right now but it's 40 again and I don't fancy digging out the cold weather gear just yet!

Ta, Ron! How'd you weather Irene out there? A few of my best sites are gone but that doesn't compare to the misery some folks are enduring.
