THIS $300+ 1895 Barber Dime

[attachment 236618 barber18951.jpg] [attachment 236622 barber18955.jpg] [attachment 236623 barber18956.jpg]

The best part is after digging it...I just looked up at the sky...thanked God:angel:...thanked my mom:angel:...hugged my best buddy Hercules:angel:...then just chucked it my pocket with the 5 rusty nails:biggrin:....now 6 I guess:bouncy:.

I am into this hobby for the joy and inner peace it brings me. I am NOT a coin collector and in fact give many of my finds away here on the forum.

I just love to see the glimmer of silver in the hole and in fact STILL feel like a kid at Christmas every time I'm lucky enough to dig one.

I had NO CLUE this was a VERY valuable dime until I got home...slung it on the counter with the 6 nails:detecting:. Yes...right dead center in the pile of nails, rust and dirt...which probably rubbed, scratched, etc while in my pocket all the way home.:surrender:

I got out my "dug" Barber dime book and noticed I had only a couple of slots left to fill...and THIS one filled one of those slots...COOL.

I then...just out of curiosity...got out my old 1997 Coin Values magazine and gandered at the barber dime prices.

1892...1893...1894...1895...ummm 1895:blink:....HOLY CRAP!:clapping:

It was then that I realized what I had...so I called over a couple of budies who are avid collectors and one is actually a dealer.

The both stated it looked to be at least solid Fine condition coin....maybe better. Still had nice details...reeded edge...full liberty...etc.:beers:

[attachment 236621 barber18954.jpg] [attachment 236619 barber18952.jpg]

I then clicked on flea-bay to view some past auctions of ones graded VG or fine...and this one looks to blow those away.
Even a few that they had listed as F-VF don't have the detail this one does...so I'm pretty stoked.

While its very true I couldn't care less about value...it's pretty sweet that this one is in pretty nice shape and I can give it to my daughter some day.:)

I was just talking to 2 close friends today about this hunt site and how it's been a blessing to me since the 70's.

When I went through the horrid process of losing my mom to cancer a few years ago...this site and my buddy Hercules probably saved my life.

I've pulled over 350 silver and 1900 wheaties from there over the years...but there is always that possibility of popping one more keeper out....and MORE IMPORTANTLY...I can clear my head and my buddy gets to chase squirrels.:)

Today I dug NO other coin in almost 3 hours...and that happens MANY trips here because myself and a ton of others have hunted this site for many years.

I LOVE my SE in the iron though...and I LOVE my choice of coils.

While my personal "foolproof":crylol: iron hunting tecnique had me on a 5 nail to ZERO keeper tally:cool:...nail #6 DID honestly sound like it had a true shot at being a coin in there with the nail whereas the first 5 digs were "iffy", "bordome" digs that you just have to dig to be sure.

My best buddy Herky was worn out from the heat when we got home...but was more than glad to lay his head on my leg while I typed up the post.:clapping:

It NEVER gets old saying this...."yet another shocking, memorable moment this hobby has given me...and another huge smile it put on my face".

As always Bryce, you have done an excellent job of coming up with a nice keeper that was
hidden or passed over by a lot of other hunters. Congrats on the Sweet Barber dime! Herc
does look like he had quite a day also.....stay safe my friend. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

LOL My latest coin book is a 2000 LOL..Not exactly up to date .I just throw the Silver in a box or tin..One of thses days I'll have to check out some dates..

Great Find my friend............... always love reading about you and Hercules adventures... :clapping:

Bryce,

Great find and a super story . . . . . we are in the hobby for the same thing and as I've said before, some of my best hunts have been where I did not find a thing but I came home with a "pouch filled with peace of mind" and in the end, that is the best find any of us can make!

Your consistent finds show that it is the user and not simply the detector that will make the finds . . . .

Again, congratulations!

Andy Sabisch

Congrats on the very nice dime. Nice to know there are some key Barber coins from the Philly mint. In my area I get mainly Phila. mint coins.

Andy, I love that saying "a pouch full of peace of mind". Many of us know exactly what you mean by that.

Bryce, great find my friend! But more importantly you seem to have all your priorities straight. Nothing like sharing the best of times with your best friend, your dog. As you know I recently lost my best friend suddenly, a beautiful long haired husky named Sky, and so your story carries even more meaning to me this time around then it usually does. I now more fully realize than I did before that your dog posts are not just a cute way to tell a story, but that you've got a real friendship there beyond words that can't even be described in a thread..

I'm like you. Not so much a coin collector. When times are rough I'm not above selling off some silver, although it is never an easy thing to do even if I'm not the biggest of coin collecting guys. It's more about the hunt to me. I'd honestly rather hunt with a few good friends and find nothing for the day, then hunt alone and make some great finds. Making those finds just doesn't carry the same "weight" or experience than calling a friend over because I think this is going to be a good one...So that we can all share the experience together. I get almost as much thrill watching a friend digging a good coin then I do digging them myself, so all my friends are under direct orders to call me over to not only check the signal with my machine, but also so I can watch them make a potential great find for the day. We often have each other do the honors of picking up the coin and seeing what it turns out to be for each other.

About 3 weeks back or so I went to an empty house lot that a few friends had gridded the tar out of. They have flagship machines, but more importantly they are great hunters, so I honestly wasn't expecting to find too much there because they even had gridded two directions over much of it. Well, I dug a 1921 Standing Liberty Quarter in Fine condition. I sold it to a local dealer because I needed some instant cash for $150. Later I checked Fleabay and in that condition that year had sold for $350 to $450 or so, and a collector friend who detects told me he would have easily gave me $200 to $250 had I ran it past him first. Oh well, I really needed the cash that day anyway, so I never look a gift horse in the mouth. I look at that like some of these people who win millions in the lottery and then they sue each other over having to split it. Makes no sense to me.

Anyway, don't mean to hijack your thread Bryce with too much early morning ramble, so once again I say great job...Not about the coin, but about spending quality time with your best friend. The coin is just icing on the cake, because that dog loves you no matter what happens. Give it an extra scratch on the ear for me.

CONGRATULATIONS MAN.
I'm very happy that you thank God for your finds.
:yikes:

What a story Bryce! I think I know how you feel - this is more than a hobby to me; it's therapy! I've always collected coins although I'm not what you would call a SERIOUS collector. I've always loved archaeology and history. Detecting combines all three. Most importantly it gives me peace time, me time and thinking time.
Nice hunt - congrats! Bruce

WOW :yikes: That is one sweet find buddy!!! I'm glad you and Hercules got some hunting time in with your busy schedule!!! Take care big man!
