18K Gold Ring

I went to one of my "secret spots" today and found a few little "treasures" one of them was a ring marked 18k on the band. After a closer inspection at home I am fairly sure it is plated. I'll take it to a jeweler to confirm. I also found the usual suspects found in a playground, quarters, dimes, nickles and of course lots of pennies. Also found was a 4 leaf clover pendant, a small ornate skeleton key and a badly tarnished charm with a micro chain on it.

Like Jim said, check with a magnifier for any peeling or discoloration. Gold is an inert mineral, doesnt react with anything. Usually comes out of the ground looking as good as it went in.

Gold filled can be very deceiving, it too looks great coming out of the ground.

Yeah the other gold rings I have found all look smooth and equal color, this one has some rough edges and different shades of color.

My limited experience with 18K has shown me it discolors worse than lower K rings. The last one I dug was nasty colored It cleaned up just fine in a jewelry acid bath.

I found a couple wedding bands that said 18K on the bands, but the color was like that of a copper penny and ask around years ago and told these were marked this way as they were sold by traveling salesmen that sold them to those bachelors that wanted to get married and were not able to get to a jewlery store to buy one. I wonder sometimes if they were scammed, or knew they were not real.
Was told 18K and up were a soft gold and bend easy, I have a gold ring not marked I found that checks out on a hand tester that shows 14K but it bend easy. Jewler said he could test it but would have to take a piece and put it in acid to be sure, but didnt want to do that as he thought it was very old and high-quality gold. This came out of area that was hit hard with detectors and being it was loaded with pulltabs no one dug it. I was using my Minelab Sovereign with the Sun Ray 180 meter and read as a pulltab beaver tail on the meter 141-142 but sounded like a nickel 143-145 with the smooth tone they give. Being it was a weaker signal I thought it was deeper than most tabs and just had to dig it as it was different.

Yes the only way to test gold to make sure its not heavily plated gold is to file into it then apply acid if its plated test will show it just scratching
it on a stone then dropping acid is not accurate from my experience

So far I’ve not dug anything “bogus” as far as marked jewelry. Probably jinxed it now…..
If you pulled that out then there is probably more to come!!!!

It's official, I took the ring to our local jewelry store and they were able to see the band is marked 18K HGE. I was not able to spot those letter's but they're the pro's. I learned HGE is Heavy Gold Electroplate. The lady wished me better luck next time.
