This crusty looking 1888 seated dime came out with a bunch of rusty stuff and actually has rust on it if you can see it in my pics... guess thats what you get when your detector can find coins amungst the iron...How bout that Chauffeur lic. Somebody got one heck of a ride to get that to Utah. I really would like to get this coin cleaned up a little as seated dimes are rare for me to find Any ideas besides the tumbler... I already have soaked it in tin foil and boiling baking soda... any other ideas? Good LUck.

WOW........................Nice dig Utal............wonder if the chauffeur is close to the lic..LOL.realy nice finds .you willbe surprised on what the chauffeur lic. is worth.......and its in good shape...........Keep digging good things ..........later

Great digs Utah! The only seated dime that I found had some black on it that just will not come off so I cant give you any advice on cleaning but it is a very nice find!!

Thank you Ex sox and OHIO for lookin and for your advise Im going to try that white vinegar as soon as i get some. Good luck to you guys!

Man I love looking at the seated stuff. Congratulations on that great find. Not to sure how to clean that coin safely. I wouldn't put that coin in a tumbler though. The silver is soft and you might ruin it. I like the license too. Good for you!!:usaflag:

Thanks 44NY for checkin out the pics. Seated is hard to find fot me thats why Id really like to get it cleaned up. Up close you can still see pretty good detail on it. the Pics turned out really good too now that I look at them ... hey sometimes you just learn as you go. Best of luck to you.

Bryce...I have been very carefully trying to clean that seated and did not even know it was seated or the date untill late last night when I got it to where it is at now. I was happily surrprised. It was really non identifyable other than silver dime before that. Hey I got to find it twice once with the detector and next while cleaning! cant beat that. Thanks for lookin! I like to read all your posts and appreciate your experiance.

Hey Christopher, Thanks for your reply. Im not certain exactly what you mean but I am willing to try anything. So... do nothing? what about a plastic coin holder? that will stop air to it right... so mabey ill just set it on a shelf for a while with nothing protecting it? I have set things out in the sun before for clean up but I know that silver turns to tarnish more in the air. I have plenty of time and Im sure the coin does to as it lays there in no hurry every time i look at it. and look at it. and look.

Ray mo, I know exactly what you mean nothing like pulling that shinny silver out of the ground that looks like the bankers burried it there for safe keeping. That usually happens about 90% of the silver i find... gleaming silver against the dark soil NICE. But this coin littlerally was mixed in with some old rotted iron stuff and its amazing i found it to begin with...Thanks for lookin RAY.

Just lay the coin by itself in there and let it sit...turn it over periodically. You can rinse it off periodically but don't rub or brush it even with a toothbrush...let the vinegar do all the work :) If you want to send it to me, I can do it for you and send it back...not to worry since I have been on here for a LONG time ;)

Congratulations, Shovel! Beautiful coin. I can see a lot of detail on the obverse side, so very gentle cleaning might be in order. Good luck restoring the seated lady, and keep the postings coming. Take care. Johnny

Very Nice Utah!!!! Keep it up!!!!! How deep was she??????

Hey Thanks for checkin out my find Arturo & Johny W. I had on my new SEF 10x12 coil which I am getting to really like compared to the stock EXII loop (coil) but I only have about 8 hrs on it compared to lots of time with the stock coil and a 14 in Excellorator....the dime chirped and hit the machine with a questionable high tone mixed in with lots of the low tone... but hey Im a shovelhead so I hardly look at the screen just listen for the sounds to repeat a little and dig a bit down to check it out (not all the time just most of the time when hunting the right spot) Good luck to you guys.
