15"dd coil for the T2+

wildbill!!

Active member
Just received the 15" DD coil for my T2+. I couldn't pass this up from Kellyco for only $85.00, they even threw in a coil cover for free. This is a huge coil and I have high expectations for it to go DEEP, It is kind of heavy though 2 lbs. 4 oz. This was a concern for me and I had asked aout the weight on this forum earlier this year but no one could give me an answer. I'll give this coil a full review once I've used it for a while.

There was an original super heavy one, then a slimmer later one. Yeah let us know. I have the older 15”. I’ve never used it.

Im not too impressed with this coil once I put it on my machine and swung it for awhile, it's heavy. Kelleyco must be trying to get rid of the old heavy coil, it looks like I got the last one.

I did an air test to compare the 15"coil to the stock coil. I seem to be getting about 2 1/2 to 3 inches more depth with it, with that being said this coil is too heavy to swing for too long, I also noticed it is kind of chattery so you have to back off on your sensitivity too keep it quiet. I was stoked yesterday but now not so much after swinging it. I have to give it a chance in the field to see how it performs.

My buddy got one to try with his F 75 LTD2 DST a short while after they came out. After about a hour to one and a half, he would retire it for that outing and put the 11" DD back on due to its much lighter weight. He wasn't impressed and he paid near twice for what they are selling for now. Didn't know, though, they had made a lighter weight 15" model. HH Jim tn

You hope it goes 'DEEP' and I'm curious what it is you are looking for, and how 'DEEP' do you think it needs to go? And what size targets are you trying to locate at-depth. There comes a point where there's a trade-off between enhanced performance on Depth of smaller-size targets and bigger-size targets. Typically, bigger-size coils are best suite for finding bigger-size objects. You can get a little over a 'standard' size coil and gain a little depth, with the right coil.

For example, I just updated a lower price on a T2+ package on the Classifieds with a NEL Super Fly coil. It does provide a little better depth than the standard coil, plus it is very controllable and light weight. I compered it on some indoor test samples of smaller to larger-size coins, and bigger CW bullets. But I wasn't sure what you're trying to find.

I mainly relic hunt. I'm hoping to use this coil to go back over some old spots and with the added 2 1/2 inches of depth find targets I'd missed in the past. I will also use it for finding artillery shells and cannonballs. I know what you are saying about the depth thing. With this coil I should be able to get a beer can at 2 feet LOL! The 15" coil is just like the 5" coil when you need it, you need it. I will tell you this when I do use it, it won't be for long because that coil is heavy.

Yeah it is pretty heavy and it makes a lot of racket. I'll probably just use it once in a while when the need arises.

I’ve been using the T2 exclusively for relic hunting for the past 8 years. I have not found a coil large, small, or anything in between that does a better job overall than the stock 7x11 coil.

I agree....but also rely on the 5” round coil as well. This new Superfly is going to give the stock coil some time on the bench, however. It’s quite good.

i've used the 5" DD almost exclusively on all the T2's I've owned this past 14+ years, and seldom the ugly and noisy 11" BiAxial. The new Super Fly is definitely a more comfortable coil to use, much, much quieter around EMI than the stock coil, and seems to eek out just a wee bit more depth.

Hope you’re right about the Superfly.
Iowa Relic is right. The new NEL Super Fly is a really good coil to take the place of the stock 11" BiAxial. Deadly quiet in and around EMI that makes the stock coil shiver and quiver. And that's coming from a guy who usually isn't a big fan of after-market coils ---- unless they work well.

Monte, maybe you should try the "ugly and noisy 11" BiAxial" again some time. They are a whole lot different today then they were emi wise back in the earlier F 75 and T2 days. I hunt quite a bit with a T2 user and a F 75 is my main swing. We both are urban hunters and its a very rare occasion (can't remember the last time, in fact) when emi was a problem. Never have I had the 11" stock coil "shiver and quiver," either.

Anyway, wildbill, hope the 15" works out for you. HH Jim tn

After my experience today with the new Superfly, I can feel a re-enforced trust for the stock 11” coil.
I took the Superfly on the T2LTD to an extremely challenging site. Large power lines and plenty of hot rocks. It was tough. Believe it or not, the stock coil is more favorable at this site. I couldn’t really believe what I was encountering. There was no setting I could use that would still get necessary depth for the site and keep the machine useable. This isn’t really a shot against the Superfly. Every machine feels effect of extreme EMI in this place. Audible and silent. So I left the area and was able to recover some good targets at depth. I did have some ghost signals, repeating on mineral apparently. I had a couple bullets in the 9-10 “ report as iron. I had it out last week in an urban setting and felt right at home with it.

Here in my home I have EMI, and some caused by a transformer on a power pole out back. I tried the stock 11' BiAxial on the T2+, then the 11" BiAxial on the Omega 8500 and switched it to the Fisher F5. In every case those detectors were much noisier from EMI than the T2 w/ Super Fly or 5" DD, and more than the Omega-85-- and F5 with the 5" DD, 10" elliptical Concentric, or my round 7" Concentric. Same location, only a coil change and all the settings were the same.

The 11" BiAxial has just never been a coil to impress me, plus the VDI is usually much more random or jumpy.

This site I was hunting has a very consistent output of EMI. There is a transformer station less than half mile away and I’m hunting 0-100 yards from the lines. (Large steel poles, 3 feet diameter, lines, a set of 6, maybe 70-80 feet over head.) For over a year now the EmI output has been consistent with one overall small drop in severity occurring in the early spring of 2020( a repair most likely)

only one machine I’ve seen handles this scenario pretty well. The g2 with Cors strike 13” coil will still get needed depth and run smoothly enough to hear deep targets.
I can also use the t2 with stock coil in BP at 40-60 sens and do ok. The whole idea of getting the Superfly was to outperform the stock coil in this site specifically. Yesterday, it did not. It does not affect my overall opinion of the coil. The site is extreme. The g2 is much better right out of the gate for emi. I will try a MGC 13” for 99$ on the g2. See how it does. It’s worth it. I’m making good success in hunting only extreme emi areas where others just don’t.

Like you IowaRelic, I strongly feel larger coils are important. In my urban hunting environment, I hunt lot of curb strips, vacant lots, school yards and the like, places that are near power lines, and I like the larger coils for these spots for their added depth. I do well hunting these spots on deeper coins that others couldn't hear using smaller coils. Certainly, smaller coils are important, too, and I use them a lot. But, I have found there are a lot of good targets down there at depth that those small coils just don't reach. When I do encounter bad emi, I have frequency shift and DST to fall back on. Otherwise, I run DST off until I may need it.

Oh, and yes, Monte, the Omega's are a different ballgame when it comes to emi. HH Jim tn

I'm sending this coil back to Kellyco. I put it on my T2+ again yesterday and something isn't right with it. I can't ground balance my machine. When I let the machine ground balance in Disc mode it comes up at 90 but when I go to switch over to all metal mode I can't manually ground balance, it just stays on 90 and I can't adjust it. It's also noisy no matter where I set the sensitivity.

I think I have to agree with you, the stock coil is the best. I'm sending the 15" coil back.
