15" coiltek and Sovereign GT

Just purchased a 15" coiltek for the beach her in Fl. Heavy sun of a gun !! Has anyone taken off the skid plate and coated it with bed liner ?? I don't care about warranty. I can say one thing it's a different animal falsies a lot near the water but I have read it's the nature of the beast. I just have to learn it. Or should I keep the cover on ? What's your opinion.?

Ron from Fl.

Ron,with this large coil any weight reduction would be a good idea.I would just leave the cover off and get a little more use with this coil in case of a sale.Good Luck Ron

Ron what I wanted to do was spray the coil not the cover with Bed liner .

hope you are fine.... still enjoying your meter and it's still holding out on the beach just fine

Ronnie, not sure how the spray would work. The 15 inch Coiltek was difficult for me to use in my ground and had to keep the sensitivity low, which I ended up selling.Hope it works out better for you.I'm still making the meters,on my last hunt I used one that was just built to make sure it worked as should.Everything is fine but getting cold here just ordered some propane. Thanks Ron

The bedliner spray will work fine on that WOT. I would recommend a few hunts to scratch it up a bit first and then clean it good with some rubbing alcohol to give you a good base for the bedliner. I dont use the WOT anymore, just to heavy. You should be able to control that falsing with less sensitivity or try a different band. No need to run the sens so high on the Sov. Try adjusting it over some deep targets and you will see what I mean. Sens does effect the depth but it also effects how far off the coils edge and that matters as well.
I use the bedliner on the SEF I have for the Sov. Dont care for coil covers anymore on any coils I use at the beach.
Dew I might have to look into one of those ultimate coils, less weight and good performance sounds good.

Neil I have applied bed liner on a couple of coils already, with no problem.. I think all the falsing comes from the coil flexing ???? That's what some people have told me. I just thought putting bed liner on would give it a stiffer action "I don't know" she falses but I still pick up signals through it but what I'm missing I don't know

Never heard of the idea of a coil flexing. They are pretty solid to be flexing. I can see the lower part of your cable flexing/moving around and that in turn could probably be picked up by the coil. The bedliner spray Ive used isnt very thick and dont really think its gonna give any strength to a coil. In fact you can still put the coil cover back on after two or three coats of bedliner and thats always been enough for me. You might look into the epoxy stuff some guys use, that might add to coil rigidity. I dont care for the stuff myself, I tried it and it chipped off after hitting clam shells/beach shells and I had to keep reapplying it for an even coat. Its a whole lot thicker than bedliner spray.
Ronnie it could be the coil too. I had a few coils that wouldnt work well on wet salt beaches. Ive had stability problems with one 10X12 SEF I had, it was the early version with the shorter cable. The one I have now works great, very stabile. Both were brought brand new.
Good luck in whatever you choose, loosing the coil cover is a good idea though, both in weight savings and having to clean it out all the time.

The only other problem I had with a coil on the beach was the S-12 it falsed like crazy. The Ultimate 13" is OK does a good job but the SEF 10x12 seems to be the best. Then after a few blogs on the WOT 15" I decided to buy one and it falses like crazy too. I lowered the Threshold to very very low and it helped a lot. Made it bearable !! Checked it on other small targets and it did well.

10x12 still my favorite I wish the 12x15 did as good but I don't think it does

I have used, like others, Rust-oleum or Dupli-Color truck bed liner, and it works great. Coil covers are a thing of the past. Like Neil said, you want to rough up the bottom of the coil just a little before application. Use a light sandpaper just enough to take off the shine and leave small scratches, wipe clean, spray several coats letting each one completely dry before adding the next. It will cure completely to where you can handle it in one hour. In a week you will no longer smell it on the coil and it will be hard as a rock. I just spray the bottom of the coil myself, but have seen people coat the entire coil. Make sure you are going to keep it as it might affect the re-sale value, some people prefer to have the original coil with the cover. It will reduce the weight a lot especially on this large of a coil.

Thanks for all that. I have coated several already and I agree it's the best hands down. I really would appreciate some expertise on using The 15" WOT on the beach....any "secretes" because of it's falsing so much on the beach of FL.

One or two posts down is a post from cjc. Thats clive clynick, in his books he hunts the WOT alot it seems and he hunts alot so you might help yourself to some pointers by shooting him a pm.

I use the WOT / Sov GT on South Carolina beaches ( moderately mineralized compared to most Florida beaches ) and had some falsing issues when I first used the coil. I had to really work on coil control, especially keeping it level and feathering the slowdown at each end of the sweep. Now I can run it at between one and two o'clock even on beaches with black sand stripes if I turn the volume down a little. I learned what the threshold should sound like by running the GT at four o'clock sensitivity, then moved it up to two o'clock. But I have to really listen to the threshold as it will change in character as a prelude to falsing . I hope this helps!

Yes that may help. We hardly have a mineralized beach here in NE FL. So they say !! Once you turn down your volume do you turn it up again. Question am I looking for a smooth threshold or raspy sounding threshold. Or does it really make a difference ?

I took the coil cover off the 15" coiltek and sprayed it with bed liner. Took a lot of weight off. I also calmed the falsing down quite a bit. Did good on the beach the last few days , really getting to like this coil very much. Found a gold ring today not a big one but just about paid for the coil already. I know it will grow on me everytime I use it. I do wear a wrist brace just so I don't develop any problems. (when I remember to wear it) Thanks for all the feed back on the Coil.

I have an Excal 800 with a WOT 15" coil, and with a straight shaft it balances perfectly. The Sovereign GT looks much heavier. I have never used a coil cover, because they are sand and mineral collectors. My balance point with the after market straight shaft is centered at the handle. That makes a big difference in the balance. If you can work this out, the WOT is a great coil.

Did you spray bed liner on it ...did you spray the whole coil black ??

I didn't spray it with anything, although Armorall is recommended by some people so the water runs off of the coil and tends to stop falsing. For some reason, mine doesn't false. I've had this coil for years and it is still functioning. I also have one on my Explorer shafts. If I was hunting in water in rocky areas, I would put the cover on and put water sealant calking around the edges... nes

You might be taking a chance of chipping the edges on that coil. I taped mine up and sprayed it. Works great.
