Coin mode and notch out clad pennies. You'll still get the all copper and wheaties.
NOT TRUE: By "clad" pennies I am assuming you mean zinc pennies. I found a 1911 cent that sounded like a zinc penny due to some corrosion. Also many Indian Heads will for some reason read lower than a copper penny, sometimes in the zinc area.
Here are the settings I use:
ALL METAL MODE= When searching heavily wooded and remotely poplualted areas. I usually use this mode when trying to identify prior activity in the area and iron is a great clue.
RELIC MODE= This is my default setting in areas that are not too trashy. It will disciminate out small iron, but it will hit all other targets, from foil (and gold) up.
JEWELRY MODE=If the area has large amounts of (modern)trash I will use Jewelry mode, but only for short amount times, alternating between relic mode. I do not want to risk missing lower conductivity targets such as gold and pewter.
COIN MODE: I rarely use coin mode. I have found numerous 18th and 19th century "flat" buttons in heavily hunted areas. I am sure these were left behind by hunters using heavy discrmination. An 1860 Indian Head "Nickle" (as the one cent piece was known before the nickel five cent piece came out) will read somwhere in the "junk" range, due to the fact that they were composed of 88% copper and 12% nickel. The only time I will use this mode is if I have little time to hunt a very trashy area.
This is the way I like to keep my settings. We all have different goals, so figure out what is best for you and stick to it.
