Picked up another Beep and Dig

Rick,

Detecting for so many years, and owning so many detectors, I’m surprised that I have never owned an X5…..I have a bunch of analog detectors that all serve a purpose, but are now at 72 getting tough to carry around….I do have a few digital machines that I will probably sell off as well as some of my analog machines….I will say this, if you can spend some time and learn the Legend, I think it will surprise you….Nokta continues to improve it…. We have both gone down this detecting path for years, and I can’t help you “getting up and down” but the features and the weight of the Legend are hard to beat for a digital machine….It will surprise you with its unmasking abilities…
I was one of the first to get a Legend in the U.S mine came from the very first shipment that hit the shores of the U.S, I loved the Legend up until I installed the 1.11 version and everything went south after I installed the 1.11 version

I got my Legend a few years ago and it is the 1.05 I believe and dug it out on Saturday to charge the batteries . the few test I was doing is in my floor in my bar as it has nails and iron in the floor and only few detector can get a signal when I put a coin on top on top of a nail I find in pinpoint. Some of them is hard to ID, but being used to the Sovereign and the X-5 the tones sound out good.
The problem for me is all the adjustments to get them right and try hunting with it when I know its at factory spec which this one don't have, I may try to take it out in a areas close by that I can dig with my relic shovel so I don't have to get down and up.
So far the legend never been out side since I had it yet and really like to try it before I decide to sell it.

I had three Legends at one time the first Legend I started with was a 1.04 version and I so disgusted with the Legend I traded off two for different detectors, still have one but it see's very little love anymore, as I really like using a beep and dig more, I love the simplicity of the beep and digs I currently own which is five, my biggest issue with the Legend was never knowing whether I had it set up correctly for the ground I detect and 75% of the time I never felt I had the Legend set up correctly for the ground I detect it just made detecting not so fun for me, (Detecting is supposed to be about having fun)

that's the reason I started investigating beep and digs, my biggest issue with the 5 beep and digs I currently own is trying to figure out which one I want to swing on a given day I like all five of the beep and digs I do own especially three of them they are all so close in performance that it is really a crap shoot to choose one over the other my top three beep and digs are the Golden Mask 7, Golden Mask 4WD and the Troy Shadow X5 I also have a Tesoro Vaquero and a Vista X the Vaquero is not as deep as the other 4 but it is still a fun little detector to swing, not swinging the Vista X much any longer for personal reasons but it is what it is

I was fortunate to get the X5 at the price I picked it up for and I almost passed on it but sure glad I did not the X5 is one deep seeking detector on the ground I detect with that 7 inch concentric coil on it, I also have the 9 inch concentric and the 5x9 or 10 inch elliptical, the 7 inch concentric is my favorite coil on the X5 weight wise the Vista X is the heaviest of of the five I currently own

Maybe it’s the dirt but my vaqueros were deeper than my 4wd with similar size coils although the Vs were concentric and that can help.
Dont know what it is but I super tuned my Vaquero and it still cannot hit as deep as either one of my Golden Mask Detectors 4WD and GM7 running the 9.5 DD coils on both My X5 will hit the same targets as My 4WD and GM7 and the X5 will do it with the 7 inch concentric mounted on the X5

the Ground I detect is highly mineralized with a heavy layer of magnetite and a heavy salt content, don't know what it is but these five beep and digs I own seem to shine on the ground I detect the Legend I cannot even get it to come close to hitting the targets that my five beep and digs can hit and that includes the Vaquero

One reason I am very interested in this new Vortex is because of the lack of settings that the Vortex does not have or appears to not have

that is what is on my Vaquero the Stock 9x8 Concentric
I was doing some testing with my Vaquero not long ago that I have had for quite a while and noticed it would not air test a civil war bullet more than about 5-6”… I know when I got bought it, it would air test much better.
I took it inside the house and tried it again, and this time it hit it much further away from the coil..
Only thing I can think is that nearby power lines effected it outside.
This possibly could be the reason you are not getting as much depth as the other detectors you have… especially with the different operating frequency… just a thought.

If I super tune my Vaquero it will hit a quarter at 13-14 inches in my test bed so it is getting good depth its just my GM 4WD, GM7 and even the X5 will hit a quarter at 16-18 inches deep in my test bed my Legend will not hit anything over 8 inches deep in that same test bed, my test bed has been in the ground for over two years so its not like the targets are freshly buried targets

I am not complaining about the depth I am getting out of the Vaquero at all, just saying it is not as deep as my other beep and digs, if the Vaquero was all i had to use i would be perfectly happy with the Vaquero but having these other beep and digs i tend to do a lot of comparisons between different detectors just to see what their limits are, the deepest of all the beep and digs I own is the GM7 with the 13x11 DD coil mounted on it, and its not that it is deeper than my 4WD that I run a 12x11 DD Elliptical because the 4WD with the 12x11 is just as deep as my GM7 with the 13x11 DD its just the GM7 runs way more stable with the 13x11 than the 4WD does with the 12x11 Elliptical

When I questioned Golden Mask about what I was noticing GM stated they quit producing the 12x11 DD Elliptical for that very reason and produced a 13x11 fighter S coil for the 4WD so it would run more stable but after I had an issue with customs when I ordered a 18 inch coil for my GM7 I am now Leary of ordering any more coils from golden Mask because of what customs did to that 18 inch coil they literally destroyed that 18 inch coil that I ordered for my GM7, U.S customs drilled 5 holes down through the top of that 18 inch coil and through the windings of the 18 inch coil, U.S customs is the ones that did it and I am still in a battle with U.S customs over that coil

Yep… I was aware of what happened to the coil you ordered.
I also understand about your test results.. Just wanted to pass on something I experienced recently.
Later models of the Vaquero came with a DD coil… I think it was an 11””x 8” coil.. not sure how much if any depth or gets over the 8”x9” coil that I have.

The way things are in this day and age U.S customs probably has my name on a black list because of the battle I am in with them, and if i order something and they see my name on the package they would probably damage another coil, or a detector I just cannot take that risk at all, even though I would like to order that 13x11 fighter s coil for my 4WD I am just unwilling to take the risk that U.S customs wouldn't damage it like they did that 18 inch coil, guess i should consider myself lucky because that package that contained the 18 inch coil also contained my 13x11 Fighter S 7 coil that was also for the GM7 they never touched the 13x11 just the 18 inch coil

not sure about the different coils for the Vaquero other than I was told and have read that the 9x8 was the best coil and deepest coil on the Vaquero whether thats true who knows all I do know is the 9x8 has great depth if I super tune the Vaquero and runs very stable with that 9x8 coil, thats the only thing with the Golden mask detectors is they do not produce a concentric coil for any of their detector and I wish they did

The little 5.75” concentric coil is a great coil too if you have an interest in a small coil… that is mostly what I used around old house sites.
I can certainly understand your concern in trying to order another coil. I would feel the same way.

One thing I have figured out with all these beep and digs is you do not have to have a large coil on them to achieve great depth every one of the beep and digs I own I am running small coils and they are all hitting targets at great depths with the small coils that X5 with a 7 inch concentric coil gets unbelievable depth the 4WD and the GM7 with a 9.5 coil gets unbelievable depth the vista X with a 8 inch concentric gets great depth and the Vaquero with a 9x8 concentric gets great depth, yes I have ran that 13x11 coil and the 12x11 coil on my GM7 and GM 4WD and the depth is even greater but I would rather have a coil mounted that is smaller and makes the detectors lighter

based on what I have seen I could not even imagine what kind of depth that 18 inch coil would get

I have been trying to locate one of those 5.75 for sale ever since I purchased the X5 but have been unable to find one someone is willing to part with

if you know of one for sale let me know because I will purchase it as long as its price is reasonable

Concentric coils seem to work best on the Tesoros.----That has been my experience anyway.
I wonder about the new Tejon I bought a year ago.
Came with the 6×9 widescan coil.
The way I've understood Tesoro.
They tune the machine the coil is going out the door with.
So will a concentric be better or worse ?

I can only say my experience.----I have had several Tesoro detectors over the years with both concentric & DD coils for them---and the concentrics have ALWAYS worked the best on the Tesoros I have had.

I have heard that it is important to tune the coil from the factory if the detector has a fixed ground balance, but not one with an adjustable ground balance.
With that said I sent an Eldorado in for a checkup some years ago and had two coils for it.
Rusty (the service manager), advised me to send in both coils with it.
Maybe someone else can elaborate more on this.

I will say my favorite coils on these beep and digs are the concentric coils, unfortunately the Golden Mask detectors they only produce DD coils for them, I keep asking Golden Mask to produce a concentric coil for the 4WD and the GM7 but Golden Mask keeps telling me they have seen no advantages to having a Concentric on their detectors which tells me at one time Golden Mask did try to produce a concentric for their detectors, personally I do not agree with golden Mask because of what I have seen with my other 3 Beep and Digs running concentric coils on the ground I detect, although both my Golden mask detectors run great on my Ground with the DD coils, I would still like to try a concentric on my two Golden Mask Detectors

I always thought it was just a matter of readjusting the internal GB trimpot on a fixed GB detector which is sometimes necessary when changing coils to get best results.? Maybe Rusty was thinking you had a fixed GB detector...not sure why?

I talked with Rusty before sending the detector in, so he knew what model it was…also, it was the ground balance control that I was having trouble with.
When I got it back it worked fine, but he told me one of the coils failed while tuning or checking and they sent me a new coil along with mounting hardware.
He even enclosed a detailed hand written note….
I believe the ground balance pot on a fixed ground balanced model can be adjusted to actual ground contritions, but is not intended to be adjusted a lot.
I am not sure what is involved with tuning the coil, but I remember seeing that quite a few people were sending them in to be retuned… of course this was when the service was free too.
