Yeah, took the yellow detector out this morning for a little park hunting. But when I get to the park hundreds of people are there for some shin-ding event. Bummer. So I decide just to drive around and see where fate takes me. Zipping by a grammar school that has two ball fields I think "What the heck." and whip into the deserted parking lot. I rig up the Ace 250.
My favorite place to hunt ball fields is along the first base line where folks like to sit on the grass. I didn't hunt for a real long time (for I was craving a ham and cheese sandwich.) But I left with 5 quarters. 4 dimes. and numerous pennies. No nickles this time. Wonder why? Anyway I found a silver ring also!
So far, every single time I take the ace 250 out I find jewelry! Amazing! Simply amazing!
I have owned a whites Classic IDX (modified), Tessoro Toltec 100, Minelab Musketeer Advantage. and a Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II> And not one of them has been as fun to use as my Garrett's Ace 250.

I took my Ace 250 out for a spin after dinner. I'm still learning to deal with mine. Haven't had it that long, but have had Garrett equipment before. I'm having a time learning to pin point with mine.

The nickels seem to give me a hard time. I noticed there seems to be a lot of falseing on nickels.

Just about a half hour before leaving the ball field I switched to all metal. I think that's where I'm going to stay with this unit. I have turned the sensitivity down to 4 marks, I still get a little falseing but nothing I can't live with.

It seems like in coins mode if it sticks on the coin it's a good coin, but if it falses it's junk. Is that what you have found to be true?

I really didn't want to leave but my partner was ready to leave so I went ahead and went back to the car. (I coinshoot with my pup) and for some reason she wanted to go home. Anyhow, drove off and left my detector at the ball park. I had it leaning up against the vehicel and I just forgot to put it in the car.

Well, when I got home I realized what I had done and drove back to the ball field. It was still there. Can you believe that?

that your detector was still there! I had a Whites classic idx w/mr.bill mods along with all her accessories taken out of my car about six months ago. I still get all teary-eyed when I think about it. It was like loosing a good friend.
A lot of junk items do fall in the nickle rang. Including my gold stoneless ring. So I dig all nickle signals. Some of my wives gold jewelry give off a signal only in the first notch so I too am hunting in all metal. A lot of tiny foil items respond in this rang. I ignore iffy signals unless I can see that its repeating at the same spot on the ground every time I pass the coil over it, then I'll dig it up.

I know what you mean about loosing a detector that way. It would be like loosing a good friend.

I truly think all metal is where we need to stay with this unit. I went to the same school again last night. $2.90 in about 2 hours so I'm getting the hang of this little guy.

I noticed that the coins over 5 inches are almost out of range with my hash mark set at 4, so I'm going to kick it up a notch, and see what happends. There are alot of minerals around this desert so I may just have to keep it at 4, but I got to try 5 and see what happends.

That was a lucky break with the detector. Have you checked John's picture on the pinpointing hot spot on the 250. It's dead on if you do it that way. Hope you have the cable snug or taped to the shaft, and the first wind going over the top of the shaft. Running low sensitivity helps a lot. If you don't have any hearing problems you can distinguish a nickel from a tab by the slight difference in sound. I rarely miss one and get a tab instead. John is profecient at this also.

When pinpointing using the method John and I have described, also watch the cursors at the top of the display ( signal intensity or signal strength ) as you jockey the coil around. When they line up all the way across, your target will be directly under the hotspot at the front center tip of the inside oval on the coil. I discovered this quirk right off the bat when I first field tested the 250 for Garrett.

Yeah if you got a lot of mineralization and alkalinity it may be a toss up but doesn't hurt to try. Keeping the coil off the ground will help also. Good luck.

Some of those targets are junk therefore the 250 won't lock on. In other cases the target is too deep and the 250 will detect deeper than it can pinpoint or ID - as is the case with many detectors. Best and only way to find out what these targets are is to pinpoint the old fashioned way ( or as if you were using the 150 ) without a pinpoint and dig it.
