I'm looking to buy a small light weight unit for my daughter, she is 8 about 85 pounds.. what would you suggest for me to get her? coinshooting and bullet digging is what I usually do.. thanks!

I would recomend the Garrett Ace 250 easy to use and verry light weight. If she does not like the hobby and you want to sell it you will loose very little they hold their value fairly well. you can get a used one for under 200 dollars.

fisher id excel only 2.5 lbs and very nice detector and when they grow up you wont have to buy another detector and the excel is very easy to use. ground balance could no be any easier.

I opted for the Ace 250 with the standard and sniper coils for grandkids. Two of them required "customizing" for proper dimensions, which requires a hack saw, possibly a drill, and a measuring tape -and some planning ahead. The littlest one also needed the arm rest moved forward which as I recall required a new hole or two in the shaft. I don't know what Garrett thinks about this kind of fooling around as it regards warranties ... I didn't check ... but it doesn't affect the electronics. All of these are still usable by an adult, and with the sniper coil you have a great kiddie- size unit. The Ace 250 is a good enough unit that the kid can use it with good results through college and beyond. I told them all if they decided metal detecting didn't interest them they could put their unit on ebay and spend the money for something else. So far, nobody has.

For 2 of my Grand children that are 8 & 9 I got the Tesoro Compadre as they are the lightest and only one knob to adjust so they are easy to use plus they have great depth too.

I would agree with Rick a Tesoro Compadre is inexpensive and not complicated. These units are fun to use even for adults.

2 lbs light. Quick target response and pinpointing. Simpler than this one they just don't get.
