"your on my property" turns into a great hunt! with permission to return as much as I want!

Went out of town on this hunt to check out a high school / new place to hunt. The high school isn't that old (1960's) but thought I might find some goodies. So a half hour into the hunt the local police show up and no doubt ran my plate on my car that sat alone in the high school parking lot. I acknowledged the officer and then went back to hunting. He watched me for a minute or two and was on his way. About 15 - 20 minutes later I hit on a pretty good signal (turned out to be junk metal) as I am down searching for the item I look up to see a pair of shoes and legs lol. So I stand up and there is an older gentlemen standing there. "you find anything?" He then said to me, " your on my property" I apologized to him and explained to him that I thought I was on school property as the other end held the school sign. I introduced myself and shook his hand. He then showed me the property line between the school property and his. He then said to me, " I don't care if you do this on my property" He then starting talking about the old house that use to sit on the lot. He then welcomed me to hunt the site as much as I want ( I was very happy to hear this) So no doubt I will be returning....

Although TONS of junk on the site, I managed to pull two Indian Head cents (1904 & 1890) a 1944 wheat and a nice Xtra rich Stand & Gilt button. I also found a neat miniature lock from the Corbin Cabinet Lock Co. New Britain, CT Patented 1888.

A word about the coil - I was using the Tornado 800 - on loan from a super great friend. This is my first time using this coil and what a HUGE difference in seperating targets from the 10" tornado. This little coil has super amazing abilities to seperate multiple targets close by... I have to say MUCH better then the 10" tornado coil. Don't get me wrong, I love the 10" tornado but was shocked at the difference in seperating multiple targets. I think I am falling in love with this little coil lol

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Nice finds EP, The extremely few IH pennies I find are barely legible from corrosion.

Great story and hunt. Thanks for sharing them.

Jim I think some barbers are coming out of this spot , the artifacts really look good was nice that guy gave you permission , its so nice when the owners do that, that was nice of your buddy to let you use the coil sound s like a winner coil , I am curently getting the most out of the WOT as i dont have such trash infested sites as you do I am looking forward to what will come out of this spot and you are really getting good at dealing with trashy spots,

Hi Ism,

Maybe it is the minerals in the ground?

I don't know about that Gunnar this guy was very poor from what the guy told me today. The guy that now owns the land use to take the past owner out to breakfast as the past owner use to eat cat food. The past owner also did not have a bathroom in the home. Instead, he went to the dirt basement to do his duty. No outhouse / no bathroom / eating cat food / to me = poor. Yes, it was super nice that my buddy allowed me to try out his "super sniper" DD 8" tornado coil. Not too many people in the world like him as his kindness is rare.

The massive amount of metal toothpaste containers / metal garbage on this lot drove me "batty" -especially towards the rear of the lot. In the front of the lot - near the main road is where I found all the coins / lock and buttons.

I went back for a little while this evening and found a nice brass eagle button made by the United States Button Co. According to my online button reference guide it was manufactured around 1837. So this house is older then I thought. hmmm maybe I will take another look around :)

Nice finds Jim!!
I see you tried the small 8" coil out. From what I have read on this coil, you can run your sensitivity up and still maintain stability while searching.
Some have said that this coil can actually get just as much depth if not more than the 10" coil, but as you have discovered, its target separation capabilities is the big plus that this coil offers.
I bet you noticed a big weight difference also between the two coils also.
Now you got me thinking about getting the 8" coil for my Sovereign LOL!!
Keep up the great finds,
Felix

Thanks Felix!

Oh yes what a big difference in weight! I went out for 6 hours today and I can feel the difference! I kept my sensitivity at auto as there was massive amounts of garbage. But Hopefully in the weeks to come, I will get out to run more testing especially with manual sensitivity. You will absolutely love this coil for just its seperation abilities alone. I know I do. It is a really nice coil to add to the arsenal.

I went into my backyard for about 30 minutes when I first recieved the coil to see what I had missed with the 10" coil. Well, I can't say targets were missed but masked because of the larger field being detected. There was one signal in particular that I did not dig with the larger coil as it sounded like a "junk target" - it sounded like junk metal "warbling". With the smaller coil, it was able to seperate much better and now I realized there was TWO coins lying next to each other - a clad dime and a Jefferson nickel. The 8" I was able to hear high pitch both ways and a mid-tone one way. This obviously prompted me to dig. Stay tuned for more testing.

I started using the 800 coil last year and I am very happy with it. I mostly hunt on the beach.

Nice finds Jim:thumbup:

That coil is only 7 1/4" OD giving you good seperation and depth. Nice and light too isnt it.

Jim you said the guy was poor and ate cat food, DUDE that guy is a classic miser, --people like that are known to hide hords if you get a signal that is big and going 180 you better investigate.

lol I started thinking that late last night. There is just so much junk - especially metal toothpaste containers. To me they sound like super high pitch coin signals I have to dig them all. I must of dug at least 30 of them. Well, if this house dates back to the 1830's then there obviously have been other people living in this house before him. It is not a big lot (maybe 80' x 40') unless the land that the school sits on use to be part of it....hmmmm but that land sits lower then this house lot. Almost as if it has been graded by machine.

Thanks Neil.

This little coil is the ticket for trashy areas that is for sure. Yes nice and light it is! I never go out and hunt for 6 hours but this little coil made the difference to allow me to detect longer. hh - Jim

Been reading your post and your finds and see you are learning the Sovereign well by using it and learning more each time out with it. This is different than doing air test and seeing what different rings read at as these do read different in actual hunting conditions than in air or freshly buried. With the Sovereigns you learn by experience and and from what I have been reading you are getting some good experience and will see how easy the Sovereign is to use and why like to grab it before my E-Trac many times, in fact the few times i been out this year because of my health it has been with the GT as the E-Trac hasn't been used this year even though it is a great detector and works excellent.
Good Luck.

Rick

I was going to say exactly the same thing as Gunnar !!

Nice going with the 800 - certainly the 1000 struggles with multiple coins in a hole and its something I have found the SEF to be really good at.... if you get a chance to try out the SEF 10x12 you might like it as well. Keep the reports coming about the 800.... there are certainly some trashy area's that I could use a smaller coil on.

Nice break with the permission - after some recent bad luck you thoroughly deserve that one.

Damn weather here is pretty awful - I am being kept in by heavy rain at night..........

With all those tooth past containers , dont expect to find any gold crowns or fillings, but the money he saved on dental repars may sit in a jar in that very yard,

Hi Rick,

Yes, I am certainly learning quite a bit at this old homesite especially with all the trash metal targets. I agree with your statement with about air testing. That is why when I first received the GT I didn't air test. I went directly to my back yard and put the coil to the ground and that is what I have been doing ever since. My philosophy is this: more time on the ground swinging the coil = more experience and the more experience, the better I will get at learning the tones to the best of MY abilities. Take care Rick - Jim

Hi Beachbat,

yes it is a nice break after the recent rescind job at the camp grounds lol. The 800 is a sweet coil to have in trashy spots this is for sure. I think the 10x12 is a bit off in the distance for me (right now) I want to focus on this smaller 800 tornado coil. Hopefully if the weather behaves, I will be out testing after work. I have iron "null" park that I want to test it out at as well as a different carnival ground (not the one I have been hunting at all summer) but a couple towns over. This carnival ground is loaded with pulltabs, bottle caps, and other trash. This lot has been used for the carnival since1893 and has been hit really good by many detectorists. BUT.... I am ready to go into the left side of this field and see if I can't pull out some nice signals amongst all this trash that I just couldn't handle with the 10" tornado. Stay tuned....

-Jim
