Ok so my second silver Coin this year is in this Black mass of crust. Im pretty sure its a Silver half dollar as it hit in the sweet spot on the detector and I will be way surprised if its not. It hits most consistently at 07 29 on my EX II but 05 29 would be a close second. I pulled it out of the black abyss from 11 inches down and lots of iron all around. I was sure it was a silver half before I dug it. (we shall see)
Just for fun lets see what date and type of Silver you all think it is. Sorry no free gifts for playin just thought it might be fun to see what you think before I crack it open. Later on the evening of the 21st Ill show a pic of the item again. In the mean time Im way syked out thinking that I found a silver half ..fun fun.
Anticipating,

Im betting its copper or clad. Silver doesnt tend to get a lot of crust build up like that.

I think I am going to agree with Dewcon4414 on this one.....silver
doesn't usually crust up like that. Copper or clad.........

I'm guessing "utahshovelhead" found the coin in ...... doh .... Utah! That would make it a land find, and not a beach find. However, they do have the "great salt lake", and enormous valley floors of salt composition soil deposits. So if it was found in certain parts of Utah, it could mimic an ocean beach find, I suppose.

So with that said, silver coins do in fact sometimes get a crusty "cacoon" of sandy black on them, under the right conditions (unlike what you would expect on land corrosion). I have found scores of silver coins that look like that, with a cacoon you have to break off, revealing the silver coin inside. They are always on salt water beaches, and only form under certain conditions (ie.: not all silver beach coins come out like that)

It does have that BEACH look to it and they do get a breakable crust... But... clad or copper, thats my story and im sticken to it.

If that is from where I think it is I am going to say 1893 barber half

I am soaking this item in a warm bath of witches brew as we speak...It is hard as a rock...but my numbers are pretty solid 07-29 in the air test.

07... still say large copper. LOL we shall see... im invested now, looking for a picture. Most of my halfs will read somewhere around 00-25 i think.

OK I'm sure the soaking did nothing to it as it never does on any of the coins I've found like this the only way I know to find whats inside is to literally twist the coin until I feel a crack then I start trying to peel the hard crust off or twist it some more... and LOOK CLOSE. 1913 Barber SIVER HALF!

Thanks for playin friends. Now you know what its like in my world...this is the fourth silver half I have found like this and one silver dollar.
Hey Rich your guess was right on but try not to let the competition know without doin there research.
Good luck

Your secret is safe. And I will keep my guess quiet as well. It may not even be close. Nice job either way.

Hey Dewcon,
The first time I found one of these I had no Idea and would of thought copper or mixed metals as well but I just had to see what was inside that sounded and targeted so nice, so I tumbled the first one...yikes! The second coin was a merc and it twisted easy and cleaned up alright. The deep silver comes out like that almost always in this lot and I'm really after the other old targets that can come out fairly nice in most cases.
Thanks for makin a guess as there were lots of views but few guessed. I had a good time with it and was way syked to find a barber under there. It was probably lost when it was new but unfortunately they take a real beating in that ground where I find them.

Utah Rich,
found one of these have ya?... Maybe well run into each other one day.

Thanks for playin.

It does speak volumes for how inaccurate that Ferr number can be, while the cond stays stable. Maybe another reason to use the Cond sounds. I found a clad penny today at about 14 inches on the beach. It was crusted and the size of a half.... but what do i get... a penny.
