Your Favorite TR-Dis Machine And Why.

slingshot, those were TR "all-metal", not TR disc as he was asking.

My favorite TR disc. was the Garrett "ground-hog". But basically, EVEN IN NEUTRAL GROUND, they were ALL quickly out-classed at the advent of motion disc. in the late '70s/early '80s. True, earlier motion disc. the swing speed was so fast, and the masking was so bad, that a lot of old-timers didn't switch from their TR disc. (esp. in junky sites, where depth was not a big issue). But as swing speeds slowed down, and averaging/masking got better (depending on filters, model, etc..) the difference between TR disc. and motion disc. got eliminated, as per ability.

Considering the max depth of TR disc. was 7" on a coin-sized target, IF you were REALLY trying, and considering that is easily attainable depth on nearly any motion machine now (even wimpy 2-filter machines, which have excellent target separation and excellent averaging), it's gotten to where there's just no advantage to the old TR disc. Another downer form TR-disc. (at least on the Groundhog), was that it appeared to have no averaging ability. Yes. the "separation" ability was great, but .... if a nail (or foil or whatever) was on TOP (exactly on top of it), your TR disc. will only *see* the top target, not average the two for a net TID.

Good ol' Compass X-100. It has a TR-disc. mode and is one scary detector. If somebody were to come out with an X-100 with updated electronics and smaller size, it would stomp a lot of today's high-end detectors. As it were, it's a heavy pig and I regret selling it to my buddy Oran. ..Willy.

It's awful hard for me not to remember my Garrett ADS Deepseeker with very fond memories. I found so much great stuff with it and it had so much depth on silver. Picked it up a couple years ago and...what a beast! The dang battery connection pins had worn out and I sold it to a local kid for cheap Heavy (like they all were). Ergonomics were horrible (like they all were). And went crazy in mineralized soil. (Same.) I found more good finds... If I ever run across that same one (or the Groundhog) good chance I'd buy it! (I'm super curious as to how it would compare to my DFX in neutral ground!!!) If anybody has that combination of machines, let me know how they compare?

Many years ago, I once chest mounted a Garrett 15 khz Groundhog detector and used it in shallow fresh water beaches. I used to use a very small amount of threshold while in the TR mode and "scrubbed" the coil on the beach bottom and just listened for a VERY SMALL INCREASE IN THE THRESHOLD. I used to dig targets that were very deep, targets that I know other detectors
passed over. They weren't all good finds but so very many were. Garrett still has a 15 khz detector called I believe the "Scorpion".
I wish they made a water proof Scorpion with the TR mode. David in N.E. Penna.

Sorry for the misread. My favorite was the AH pro. I know, I know. It wasn't deep. But boy did I find the stuff with it. I probably would have chosen another, but my modus operandi was schools, parks, etc. I found a Silver at a full 12" with mine. I thought it was a beer can. It gave a signal 2-4" off the ground and I plunged my knife (6" shaft) into the ground and dug a plug, plunged it again in that hole and just at the hilt heard a "clack" sound and my heart immediately sank. I knew what I had done-left a nice gash in an 1880 something silver dollar.

Hate doing that! ( Haven't done that in a while.) Most of us know "The Rules" but..................... Guess it's proof that the learning curve needs to be revisited occasionally? Never done it to a high end coin thank god!!

I feel your pain brother

I had a Wilson Newman Chief that I really liked. I also had a Tesoro Mayan that was a very good machine. They were both very easy to use and reverse discriminated very well. It is hard for me to pick one as I had several that I liked, but I don't want to go back today. Bill in Texas

I still use my Compass [ TR ONLY] when looking for a privy.I try to visualize where the privy would be placed from the house and when searching an area and the machine goes silent at a large area, nulling out because of the high mineral content....PRESTO....I have found the privy.Works everytime.VLF,BFO,MULTI-FRQUENCY,PI,nothing works better then the TR machine....
