Explorer gives you three ways to interpet a target before you dig..
Audio tone, digital screen, target crosshair screen...As far as screens go I start with the digital after I get a favorable audio response and if the number is in the ball park recheck it on the crosshair screen to make a decision to dig or not....I favor the digital from the get go as a bouncing crosshair all the times is not for me. Many prefer the crosshair screen and whatever works however in any case would use all three before I dig an 8-10 inch hole. Many ways to setup the Explorer and many excell with a variety of setting that work for them. As far as I am concerned Explorer gives a lot of info so use it wisely and with time you will dig less and have more goodies in the pouch at the end of the day...

Especially since digital and smartscreen are representations of the same thing.

Learning how and why that crosshair moves in certain conditions is a big plus while digital readings are fairly constant...Mike Moutray has some excellent info if you check his site...After a while you are able to pick out those iffies thru time in the field and crosshair movement as thats where its at..
