Your choice in a small coil?

Southwind

Well-known member
I have the stock coil and the Detech 13" Ultimate and I'm looking for a small coil for the trashy sites like our city park. I did a search and was surprised I only got hits on larger coils. For those who have used a few of the smaller coils on your E-Trac what do you like best? Is the NEL SharpShooter 9.5”x5.5” and the SEF 8x6 close?

Thanks

haven't used the 6x8 enough yet but so far I like it. Have a lot of time on my 6" eq2 and REALLY like it! Think you could go either way with close results? Either way you gotta have a small coil.......

The 6X8 SEF is a great coil and I would get another if something ever happened to mine. Also I do like the Sun Ray X5 coil. It hits deep and loud with great separation. Small coils are needed in those trashy parks. Best of luck !

I could also get some good use out of one for my own yard. My house was built in 1910 but the yard is full of iron. I had to clean out the areas where I wanted my coin garden. If I run my AT Pro over any part of my yard you hear a solid blanket of grunts and the E-Trac is a solid null. I had to dig a hole and use a magnet to remove the iron. Here is the magnet from just one random hole in my yard 5" wide by 7" deep. I know there is some good coins if I could just get past all the iron.

First thing I would do if that was my yard is punt!
Then I'd get a 4.5 x 7 Excellerator use TTF and go very slow in the noise cancel frequencies up to about 6--above that the tones stay true but the numbers begin to get larger/change.
I believe the sharpshooter is a bit more crisp at separation than the 6x8 and I know the warranty is twice as long.

My Favorite all around E-trac coil is the Sunray X-8. It has better separation then the Pro coil and almost as much depth and less than a Pound in weight. I tried the 6X8 SEF and it was heavier about the same separation and not near as deep in my ground. Also had a Sunray X-5,good in mega trash,But I mostly hunt semi trash so the Sunray X-8 is my all around favorite coil.

Well ... here's my "two cents" worth

I've spent over 3000 hrs. in the field with my E-Trac over the 6 1/2 years.
At least 95% of this time was spent hunting junkie sites with small to medium sized coils.

From what I've read - "Small coils are coils that measure 7" or less".
I used a 6" EQ2 coil for years - till it shorted out - ( I plan on getting another one ) beleive it or not - I hit a lot of 7" to 8" coins with it - this little coil is nothing short of fantastic !

I decided to try the 4.5" x 7" Excellerator coil after the 6" EQ2 shorted out - been using the 4.5" x 7" for two seasons now - I love it - I honestly don't think it hits as deep as the 6" EQ - but it gets in tight spots better than any other coil - a fair trade as far as I'm concerned. I think the main reason more people don't use the 4.5" x 7" is the price - its $75.00 more than the 6" EQ2 - but it's money very well spent if you hunt in a lot of heavy iron, around old cellar holes, very overgrown sites, etc.

I got a Sunray Stealth X-8 last year - for my type of hunting it's the perfect in between sized coil for every day use - it hits deep - covers a decent amount of ground - real good separation in iron and it's still small enough to get into tight areas.

I've never used the Sunray X-5 or SEF 6" x 8" coils - but one thing is for sure ... everyone that has either one of them thinks they are great !

Good Luck & Good Hunting !

I've also got the NEL Sharpshooter and its all you say. Found my oldest seat'd with it at about 8".
However, in my experience it likes to spoof a good 2way silver indication with deep iron nails, screws, bolts.
Since this is my only small coil, could be all small coils exhibit this because of their smaller transmit/receive energy foot print. Don't know for sure. I'm think'n about picking up a 6 by 8 SEF next Spring and compare the two.

EXACTLY...7-8" dimes pretty regular!

I am from the SE Pro camp and today I used my 6" EQ2 for the first time, Its my first venture into the "aftermarket" coil arena. I took it to the typical old, well hammered public park and coming from the stock 11" coil this thing definitely falses more, I don't think I would call it "excessive" but it's surely more than the stock 11". No big finds but I did dig quite a few pulltabs/ pullrings, with one nickle, there aren't that many high tones left but I hope to squeek out a few more with the 6" EQ2. I didn't change any settings but a ground cancel.
For the guys with the 6 "EQ2, do you change any settings between stock and small coil?

I don't change settings when I change coils.
Almost always run in 2TF with Auto + 3 Sens.

Been out 2 times with my new x-5 coil on my new E-trac. LOve it. My buddy pulled over 100 silvers with one last year.
he would find coins I missed. Now the tide has turned. He was using te sock 11 coil and me the x-5. He missed
a Civil war Calvary button due to junk but the E-trac pulled it out with a reading of 12-41.

I use the 6x8 on mine 90% of the time, great separation and superb depth. I give it two thumbs up. Works great in the trashiest of areas. Any smaller coil and to me it feels like you cannot cover any ground at all. I don't wanna spend all day covering a tiny spot

I can relate to your iron woes in my own yard. My house was built in the 1860s. They used those cedar shake shingles. It makes detecting around the house nearly impossible.

those buttons for me ring up 12-17 ... wonder what's the difference

I use both the 6x8 SEF and the SunRay X5 often and are both great coils. I agree with G4E that the X5 is too tiny to swing and cover large areas at a time with, but it's perfect to hit an extremely trashy area real slow and pick out the goodies. I have found a number of coins with these coils that a larger coil would have not. The X5 and the EQ2 are perfect for getting up close to the foundation, trees, metal fences and post. A small coil is a must for any detector.

IMHO, I have never found a coil as good for everything as the 4.5x7 Excelerator. Can't say enough good about this coil. It has found 99% of my best Etrac finds. Similarly, the 4x6 has found 99% of my best finds on my M6.

I belive the button is brass or copper. That might be the reason. I need to run it over my coil. It could have been masked by another object.
