I am in the middle of remodeling a rental unit to sale. (my last one thank goodness). I was standing in the front yard talking with one of the neighbors there and looked down and found a dime in the dirt driveway. The lady said they pull a picnic table out on Sat. night and play nickel dime poker under the street light. So I broke out my ole Whites Prism 5 I keep in the truck and went to swinging. Here is my booty for less than an hours work.

Nice...looks like the ring is probably onyx, huh?

GH I got all that in a dirt driveway no grass just 2 to 3 inches of sand. It all came out of an area 10ft.wide by about 20 ft. long. A couple of scoops I got two coins at once.Very fine sand you didn't have to shake the scoop it just ran out like water. I was in a hurry, had a project to get back to. I wish all hunting was that easy, but I would rather been in the water today. HH

Mike I tested the stone, it read just past the Glass line , barely in the Tourmaline, there is no Onyx on my tester and I know little about stones, but yes it is black like an Onyx.

It's a volcanic glass that gives a high polish when turned on a lapidary wheel. Great bit of hunting for the time spent.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

So you don't think it could be onyx?

On my Gem tester it falls on the line with Tourmaline,Iolite and Garnet. It is 1/16 of an inch thick and no light shines thru it. It is hard, tried to scratch the back side of the stone with a medal scribe with little pressure and no scratch. Like Mike said it looks like Onyx. Where would Onyx fall on the meter of the Gem tester? My Gem tester has no Onyx on it.
